How do cats clean their teeth?

I have always wondered how cats have sparkling teeth after doing their messy business of eating, napping, chewing, playing or biting. They lick their fur clean, but do they lick their teeth clean?

P.S. : My cat also chews on weeds/lumps of grass in my garden. i have been told by a relative that this is just like a medicinal thing for the cat. A bit like vitamins??

How do cats clean their teeth?
Cats clean their teeth by eating hard food it help with plaque build up
Reply:The same way as dogs I guess.
Reply:lol dont know!
Reply:Their tounge has very strong saliva that they take a bath with and clean their selves!
Reply:They should eat some dry food as this helps clean their teeth
Reply:Bird feathers?

Only kidding. Lots of cat foods that aren't moist aid in the cleaning of their teeth. As for eating the grass, its supposed to settle a stomach in dogs, but I have a cat that eats grass like a cow! He hasn't any digestive problems that are visable.

Also their tongues are like sandpaper so that must help their teeth!
Reply:i like cheese too:) lol, just kiddin...err i think if u give it cat biscuits then thats prob a way...:)
Reply:Chewing bones cleans their teeth.
Reply:With food, I think. One of my cats has gingivitis and has special biscuits to clean his teeth.

I've tried to train them to brush and floss, but they lack the manual dexterity and the self-discipline. That's ex-stray cats for you.
Reply:Well, they go down Boots and get catnip flavoured toothpaste and a toothbrush with easy grip for claws and then they lather up and spit.
Reply:Cats and dogs clean their teeth by themselves or by the help of veterinarians and technicians (or sometimes their owners) with a special animal tooth paste and brush. Otherwise, cats keep their teeth clean naturally by eating hard cat food. The cat food cleanses the cat's teeth, by scraping off any tartar or debris they may have on them. Incase you were interested...dogs also do somewhat (basically) the same thing as cats (chewing hard food for example) but dogs have the benefit of chewing on bones and special chew toys designed for the prevention of tartar and for keeping their pearly whites...well...pearly looking. Hope that helped. :)
Reply:Dogs and cats don't clean their teeth. Many middle aged animals have tartar build up, I've seen older animals with huge lumps of tartar on their teeth.

Luckily for them the tartar tends to grow mainly on the outside of the teeth on the upper jaw, it doesnt stop them eating but its really bad for their gums and they can get infections.

Cats often lose teeth to decay as they get older.
Reply:After the cat is a few years old, your vet will probably suggest having them cleaned. Cats who eat soft food regularly have worse teeth than those who eat hard food regularly.
Reply:I've heard that the cleaniness of a cats teeth is prone to genetics. Some cats just have naturally clean teeth. Also, you must be feeding your cat the right food. About the grass thing - it helps with digestion. Just be careful that there aren't any poisonous plants that your kitty can get to. There is a cat grass you can buy at the store in a little pot. It helps kitty with digestion.
Reply:cats don't really clean their teeth like we do. Instead they eat their food and chew on grass. Cat food is made with something special in it that when they chew the food the stuff inside it cleans their teeth.
Reply:I've three cats, they scratch their mouths backwards and forwards (from their nose to the corner or their mouths) on the corner of the coffee table in a toothbrushing action. I think that deals with the sides of their mouths. Tongue for the front I suppose. Cats oral hygene isn't all that good as they are meat eaters. Dry food and regular trips to the vet if you are talking about how do "owners" keep their pets teeth clean!
Reply:dried food helps clean there teeth,a bit like dogs, plenty of water needs to be around tho,or you will catch them drinking out the toilet
