I have had a few dentists in the past 15 years. One said to brush at an angle into the gumline to get my teeth clean up to the gums. Another said not to brush at an angle because it would just wear away the gums. Instead, he said, brush side to side. A third said that up-and-down or circular motion is the way to go.
How do you brush, and does anybody really have any idea about the best way to brush?
Also, I have been having tooth sensitivity near the gumline on one of my teeth (especially when I eat hard foods or touch the area). My dentist did a small bonding job there to relieve the sensitivity, but I still have it. Any idea what might cause it? It's not extremely aggravating--just annoying.
Thanks.
What's the best way to brush your teeth (and more tooth care issues)?
brush vertically be sure not to put too much pressure on it
Reply:I typically brush with a toothbrush and toothpaste. No particular way, and I've got great teeth and gums.
Reply:I agree with the circular motion. I think that's the best way to clean teeth and get the gums
Reply:Brush each tooth gently...in a circular motion....just at the gum line....no need to brush hard..other wise you could get gum recession.....It should take you no Less than 2 minutes. Just be gentle...and care for each tooth......Most importantly don't forget to floss.....for it will keep your gums and teeth healthy....
trust me i know.
Reply:i floss and scrape my teeth before i brush and then i brush up and down and then side to side and sometimes my gums get a little irrated but the listerine takes that away

Tips for brushing a toddlers teeth?
My daughter is 16 months old and she refuses to let me help her brush her teeth. She loves to hold her toothbrush and brush them herself but when I try to help her she clamps her mouth shut. She doesn't do a very good job and I'm not sure what I can do to get her teeth clean. I read somewhere to use wet steralized gauze pads (in addition to her brushing) to wipe off the plaque/tartor from her teeth. It won't for one or two times, but then she bit my finger really hard. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

At least she attempts to clean her own so things are going in the right direction. Clean your teeth at the same time as her showing her the different movements and areas to brush so she can copy you. These are only milk teeth and onluy have to last a few years so a few month of poor brushinf will not matter too much.
More important is diet - not too much juice or squash - sweets ans cakes in moderation, fizzy drinks an occadional treat - as these eat away at the enamel. Unflavoured Milk and water are harmless to teeth.
She should also visit the dentist with you so she can get used to having her teeth checked at an early age.
Reply:You just have to do it. My 18 month odl didnt want us to brush his either. But the deal is, WE brush them first and THEn he brushes.
Reply:Try those spin brushes, they pretty much do the work for you. Then, you can help her move the toothbrush around without sticking your fingers in her mouth. Be sure that you are using toothpaste that has no floride in it since she is too young to understand the concept of spitting it out.
Reply:16 month love to brush her teeth. Every time any one in the house brushes she must. I like the deal First I brush then you. But another thing is you brush mommys teeth and I'll brush yours. She may like that game. Also try to get her to moch your movements with the tooth brush. Good practice and mine loves that game. Also maybe brush some one elses teeth and praise them then try your daughters and giver her as much or more. Good luck
Reply:I asked my doctor when my son was 2 if I should be brushing his teeth, and he said that there was no need. Children at that age can't spit either, so anything that was "brushed" would end up getting swallowed.
Unless you are feeding her a ton of sugar, in my opinion, she doesn't need to brush her teeth at that age, and she certainly shouldn't be using toothpaste.
If you think about it, humans weren't created to have to brush their teeth, so if you don't feed your child junk and keep the food you are giving her natural, you wont have to worry about brushing her teeth for a while.
Reply:I give our 14mo old the toothbrush and tell him it's time to brush his teeth - in the meantime I fill up a little cup with a few sips of water and then take over. I brush his teeth while "singing" to him about brushing his teeth. He does have a short attention span since he'd rather play with all the things on the bathroom counter instead, so we brush thoroughly but quickly. If he clamps or bites the brush, I try to make him laugh by calling him my little monster so that he opens his mouth and try again! When I'm done, he gets to drink from the "big boy cup" which is kind of his reward, so to speak.
With anything else at this age, repetition and consistency are key. Our next step may be to try a kiddie toothpaste, too. Good luck :)
Reply:just gently squeeze her cheeks together to make fish lips %26amp; force it in there, it never hurt my sons %26amp; also tell her that she can brush when your finished. Also do this at her level. After I had finished I gave my boys there brush so they can have a go %26amp; at first they tried to brush %26amp; ended up chewing on it %26amp; now after watching me brush my teeth they are getting much better %26amp; I really dont need to do much now.
Reply:let her chew on the toothbrush for fun. i let my son think it is one of his toys and not a chore,. he just chews on it all day and cleans his teeth. the more you force it on her, the worse it might get.
Reply:My daugher is 18 months and we're going through the same thing. What works for us is I sing the ABC's and during the song I have to brush her teeth, but after I'm done singing it then she can brush her teeth. Not only does it work but she's picking up her ABC's :)
Reply:Well even if her teeth don't get that clean, remember she'll have another pair coming when she's older. But it's good to start practicing dental hygiene at an early age
Reply:my daughter is now 2 and used to let me brush her teeth then went through a phase where she wouldnt let me near her mouth with a brush - she had to do it herself! now when we get up in the morning i put toothpaste on her brush and give it to her and she trys to brush em and then i will give em the once over. if you sit down in front of her then she should try and copy you and learn fairly quickly how to brush a bit better. worked for mine. all the best!
Reply:my 22mths used to be like that too. He is excited about it and wants to explore and so i let him do it himself. Guess he got tired of it already and he allows me brush it now. And i agrees with the 2nd answer, get those battery operated spin brush. It will make things easy.

I have a 22month old and Every day its a battle, I usually brush teeth after her bath while she's wrapped in a towel, (that way her arms are wrapped in the towel and she can grab the tooth brush)
I lay her across my lap and wait for her to open her mouth, she will refuse at first but after a few moments she'll start crying and i just have to brush as fast as i can, I really hate to do it though, She screams bloody murder the whole time and its not fun, but you must keep those little teeth healthy~
Reply:Let her do it herself at first and then just say "let mummy finish off please" then she has done it herself but you are making sure that it is done properly. She just wants to be a big girl and do it herself. Either that or you wil have to cheat and wait until she is asleep and give them a quick scrub before she wakes up!!! o/j Hope this helps!

I have plaque on my bottom front teeth, if i get them cleaned can they get loose and fall out?
I have noticable plaque on my bottom front teeth. and since ive been pregnant (5 months) ive also noticed the gum there on the bottom is receding. i know i have to go get them cleaned, but my husband got his cleaned and he has a loose tooth. and he has the whitest teeth! does any one know if cleaning your teeth with somewhat recideing gums can make your teeth fall out?
I have plaque on my bottom front teeth, if i get them cleaned can they get loose and fall out?
Not getting them cleaned will cause periodontal disease, and then yes they will fall out.
Reply:I don't think it will make your teeth fall out. I had receding gums that happened during pregnancy too. Not sure why it happens. I've read it has to do with lack of calcium (are you taking a calcium supplement? Drinking milk?) but really who knows. :)
Go to your doc anyway. Also, a Sonicare toothbrush will help. They're not always the cheapest, but they really help to use the ultrasonic waves on your teeth and clean really thoroughly.
Also, you can buy plaque looseners in the store (in the mouth wash section). You swish with it first, then brush. Use a SOFT brush (a hard or even medium brush will be too rough on your teeth and gums and make it even worse).
Best of luck to you. Happy pregnancy!
Reply:rather your teeth will stay more.
the plaque will slowly eat into the teeth, slowly, but if it is removed the chances that the teeth will stay are going to increase.

Reply:Having noticable plaque on your teeth is an indication that you're probably not brushing effectively. As a result of not completely removing plaque from your teeth, the bacteria that's in the remaining plaque produce toxins that irritate the gum tissue. Several things can happen from this... one of which is the gum tissue starts to recede. The best recommendation is to have your teeth professionally cleaned and examined. At that time your dentist or hygienist will do what's called perio charting. This will let them know what condition your gums are in. Being pregnant plays a role in the condition of your gums too. Don't worry, having a cleaning even with receding gums won't make your teeth fall out. But in order to get an accurate answer for what may be going on in your mouth, you really need to see your dentist.
Reply:They'll fall out if the bone structure has already been eroded away. Getting your teeth cleaned is the only way to reverse (to some extent) or stop this.
There is such a thing as "pregnancy gingivitis", which is where plaque bacteria increases because of hormone secretions. It also happens during puberty and from birth control medications.
Tidbit: At dental assisting school, my instructor told us stories of being a hygienist for the army. Lots of soldiers had calculus (tartar or hard plaque) that covered their teeth, and only when she flicked off those pieces of hardened plaque did she discover that it was the only thing holding their teeth in!
Reply:You are probably talking about calculus.Plaque is soft and will be cleaned just by brushing. When it is not cleaned often enough,it becomes hard and starts causing gum disease and bone loss.I am talking about years of neglect,it just doesn't happen overnight.Anyways it does hold your teeth together, but keeps eating away your bone, because it is bacteria.Your bone should be holding your teeth, not the calculus. You need a deep cleaning now. When your teeth become loose after you get your teeth cleaned, there are other ways to bond them together.Ask your dentist about it .No dentist will ever recommend you to leave the bacteria inside your mouth. It will do more harm than good.

Reply:Only the dentist can tell you for sure. But yes, a cleaning is very very benificial. White teeth is not always an indicator of healthy teeth. Gum disease is a silent disease that many ppl have. No pain unti your teeth are about to fall out. Sometimes brushes simply can not reach deep in between teeth or below the gumline. Which is why a professional cleaning is very important. If you do not address the plaque accumulation now, then yes, it can lead to gum disease and eventually your teeth will fall out. Get 'em cleaned and piece of mind. It's fast and you don't have to worry about it again for a few months. No, cleaning with receding gums will not make your teeth fall out. But ignorning it will. I have receding gums from brushing too hard and still get reg cleanings, no problem. Go and get it over with. A doctor can also adress any questions.

Horizontal impacted wisdom teeth angled out slightly to chin now 1/2 decay. dentise adv not to remove....?
...it cos judging fm x-ray, it will cause temporary to permament damage on nerves to my left side of face. Gum covers 70% of it and that's the area that decay. The 30% exposed has been kept well. Dentise adv only if it gets worse, then need to consider to take out the one before it, let the wisdom teeth come out a bit more so lesser risk of damaging the nerve....where shall i seek 2nd opinion? Is it feasible to have the exposed area drilled, so that I can at least keep the 'leftover' of the wisdom teeth clean to avoid surgery that will damage the nerve???

I have a 18 mth old who all of a sudden refuses to clean his teeth, any solutions?
My son is generally a very good boy, except all of a sudden he refuses to clean is teeth. I was given some advice which was to not let him off the seat until he has let me clean them. I have tried this everyday since I was told this (which still doesn't result in his teeth getting clean any only resulting in him crying and screaming and it has now become an event which we both do not look forward to. I am putting his behaviour down to the terrible twos as I am pretty sure he is not teething.
I have a 18 mth old who all of a sudden refuses to clean his teeth, any solutions?
Dont push the issue: if he doesnt want them cleaned wait until later on maybe when you are changing his diaper or getting him ready for bed. Making him stay in his chair will only get you both mad and upset. Its not worth it. Maybe you can try to make it a game. Sing songs, do a little dance whatever makes him giggle and then go in for his teeth. Good Luck.
PS: My 19mo son hates when I clean his teeth but he loves to do it himself. I put a little baby toothpaste on his tooth brush and he sits in the bathroom while Im getting ready for work or for bed. When he is done he knows I have to do a once over with the toothbrush. Maybe you can try letting him do it himself.
Reply:does he give you any hints as to why?
is it the flavour of the toothpaste? is it the time? does he want to do it himself?
Reply:I got my daughter this weird finger brush thing..i would put the weird brush over my finger and brush them that way...but when she decided that was no fun i let her pick her own toothbrush from the store..and got some baby gel toothpaste..it is made for babies and young toddlers. I let her look in the mirror while we did it...i let her try it by herself then would just help a little. Also if i would sit her up on the counter and we would brush our teeth together it would help. OOOH we also got her a little kid spin brush that she thought was really neat...plus it helps clean the teeth even if she wasn't good at brushing hard enough...
Hope this helps
Reply:Look behind his teeth (like the roof of his mouth) -- are there any little white blisters? My grandson refused to let us brush his teeth about that same age and he had thrush. PAINFUL!! If you see anything out of the ordinary, take him to the Dr.
Reply:well you just simply need to lay down the law and let him know whos boss.....discipline him now while you can...cuz if you think this is bad just wait tils he older:/
Reply:Buy a cartoon toothbrush that he will get excited about and get some fun toothpaste appropriate for his age. Explain that big boys get to use these and throw a "Yaaayyy!" Party when he lets you brush. Give him some control and let him put the paste on. Toddlers love to be involved.
Reply:I gotta tell you i dont think its all that important to clean the teeth of a kid this age....he is so young....But if its important to you....offer him a reward like stickers or a favorite new toy kind of thing if he can clean his teeeth every day for a week ...(or three days ...whatever)
Reply:This may sound kind of extreme, but I told my oldest daughter that if she doesn't brush her teeth every day that they will fall out. We only make them brush their teeth once a day right before bed, and sometimes they ask to brush them at other times on their own. But getting speical toothpaste and toothbrushes at the dentist every 6 months does help encourage them.
Reply:My daughter was like that for a period of time. We let her pick out her own toothbrush and paste and then I printed a Blue's Clue's brush chart off of the Nick Jr. Website and got stickers to put on them so she would want to earn them. It worked really well with her and she loves to brush her teeth now. Also, I let her brush my teeth while I brushed hers, it was a bit difficult but it made it fun for her.
Reply:my son did that too about that age. I figured out he wanted to brush his own teeth. try letting him hold it and help guide him, showing him how to brush. show him in front of a mirror too. it might help. also brush your teeth at the same time. worked for me and my son. good luck
Reply:Let him pick out his own toothbrush at the store, and get some flavorful kid tooth paste. I understand he is only 18 months. I have a granddaughter the same age, who picked out the toothbrush she wanted!

Very Important Question about your teeth! PLEASE ANSWER!?
I am a dental hygienist who works in a small office. We need more people to come in and get their teeth cleaned. Any ideas? What makes you WANT to get your teeth cleaned at a certain dentist's office? What keeps you coming back every 6 months? Please let me know what you're thinking!
Very Important Question about your teeth! PLEASE ANSWER!?
I headed a large elite clinic in Northen Cal for many years. We were extremely successful and we never did a scrap of advertising, not even in the phone book. Just a simple listing. People came to us and sent their friends and families and continued to come back to us even when they moved out of the area if they could manage it. We made certain that every single staff member a patient encountered while in our office treated them like family, bothered to remember their name and something about them and above all treated them with cheerfulnees, respect and honesty always. The hygienists always called new patients and anyone they did a new procedure on or anesthesia to check up and see how they were doing. In the course of their dental visits our hygienists would ask their families and ask if they had a good a dentist already. If not they told the patient, "we'd love to see them here because we know that if they are referred by you they are the kind of people we'd like to have in our practice." We also keep an efficient recall system in place by scheduling their next appointments before they leave the office, sending them a card two-three weeks before their appointment and confirming two days ahead. It didn't hurt that we made sure that our practice always use state-of-art procedures and equipment and let the patients know it. Good luck.
Reply:I go to one of the most expensive dentist in my town because everyone there is wonderfully pleasant and genuinely concerned for my teeth and my children's teeth. I will always go there.
But years ago, I could not go because I had no insurance.
I can honestly say the answer to your question (for me) is:
DENTAL INSURANCE.
It is easy to want to see a dentist, and take care of your family's teeth, IF you have dental insurance.
I believe that a lot of families just are not able to afford a regular dental schedule.
Medical and Dental services are always needed. Unfortunately, a large population are unable to obtain such services.
Reply:Put up posters with decaying or nasty looking teeth and a little slogan(ex. Come clean your teeth, 1 time a week!). That's what they did in my town and everyone was like, "ew, gross" because they didn't want their teeth to look like that.
Reply:For me it is all about not being rushed and herded in and out of the office. I appreciate a kind hearted dentist and dental hygienist. My dentist is a wondeful he is patient and gentle with his patients whether or not they are wimps! There are sometimes that I don't quite make it on the 6 month mark so I would ask that I not be hounded about why I didn't make it in to the office.
Reply:dental insurance!
Reply:If you offer your currnet patients reliable, friendly care; referrals are your best bet. Also, inform your patients about the importance of continued care. I always tell our patients that keeping their teeth clean is like cleaning up your credit.
You have to put in work to get up to where you need to be, then keep working at it to maintain.
And go out in your scrubs! The beauty of scrubs being so comfortable is that you can wear them out to run errands (and get really good service!) and whenever I do, I inevitably get asked about what realm of healthcare I am in. Make sure to carry business cards with you. But not in the obvious front pocket, that looks like you're out fishing for business. Dig in your purse a little for them, and make sure to sign each card prior to handing it out. Even if you don't hear from them right away, don't fret. Make a good impression and they will come around.

Sounds like you need to visit doctor "house". Sorry for a joke at a time like this. But its true house is a doctor that takes on unknown health problems and makes sense of them. (P.S if you don't know doctor house is not real. But there are many doctors in the real world that have his job but they don't break the law every episode.)
You might need to see someone that can really start to research and solve your Dental problem. Anyhow go find an other cancer specialist just in case the first one missed something. That would seem to be to be the next step. I am willing to bet your person dental care is already as great as you can make it. Using to much mouthwash can dissolve gums to some degree. Perhaps your so scared your useing it as often as you drink? Just an unlikely thought.

Reply:Okay! Bones are eaten away or disintegrated because of abscesses. If the bone is being eaten away it may be due to an abscess. Did your dentist take an xray? Now let me tell you something. This is irreversible damage, incurable if the bone is wiped out. Abscess is an infection of any time, even fungal. If he has taken the xray good but if not ask him to take one immediately. Your next step would be to go to a periodontist for a bone graft. Most periodontists graft cowhide ligature bones which are not very good. There are very few, mind you very few who actually graft human bones. They are expensive. But then it is your mouth. Would'nt you do anything for it? Good. Find out a periodontist of good standing who does bone grafting of human bones. Bones matching is no problem nowadays. It will take about a year for the bone to completely grow and alignment takes place naturally with agood periodontist. Many a time you will need an oral surgeon to work with the periodontist and it depends on how you react and how many questions you ask. This way your teeth will keep getting looser and looser because the bone is being eaten away by an abscess. Cancer????? Who told you and on whatg basis? Ask your dentist. This is what happens when innocent people are not able to get in touch with good, sincere and honest doctors. Go ahead. Get it done. Ask the periodontist if he can do a human bone grafting which will give you permanent and solid results. I feel so upset and so disturbed. I wish you all the best and healthy recovery. Good luck. Wisdom teeth extraction?
Hello All!
I am just trying to figure out if everything seems to be going normally in my post wisdom tooth surgery recovery. I have been asking questions about it lately, I am a worrier so I appreciate the patience.
I am roughtly 84 hours past my surgery (all 4 impacted). At this point I am feeling stronger, less tired and 3 of my 4 sights are pain free. The one site that still hurting, it is about a 2 or 3 on a scale of 10 ( with no pain medication).
Is this normal? Am I past the dreaded dry socket threat? (Im a non smoker, not on birth control, keeping the teeth clean and doing the salt water thing)
Thanks for your answers.
Wisdom teeth extraction?
You sound right on track! I had mine removed at the hospital, all four were impacted. Nobody warned me about dry sockets, so I went all weekend in agony, thinking I was just going through the process like everybody else. Finally, on Monday, I called the dentist and went in. They stuck some gauze strips in the holes to keep the nerves from being exposed to the air. Problem solved.
You're lucky you were informed about what to expect. I doubt you'll get dry sockets at this stage cuz the holes are healing. If you get serious pain, you'll know what to do... go to the dentist immediately and have him take care of it. It works almost instantly!
Happy Healing!
Reply:i had a wisdom tooth extracted (not impacted). and it was awful. yours sounds way worse than what i had gone through. but sounds like you are comming along quite well. each site would heal differently. and if your pain is only 2 on a scale of 1-10, that's tolerable.
don't worry. keep doing what your doing.
hugs!
Reply:don't worry ur doin' fine. I got a funny story 'bout when i got my wisdom teeth out. After i was done my parents helped me out to the car and apparently i told the secretary "thank you for inviting me i had a wonderful time." i can't remember though because i was so drugged up!
Reply:Just keep doing the salt water until all the pain is gone. Your on the right track. I had all four of mine done at the same time too.
Reply:I just got my wisdom teeth removed like 4 months ago.
I had some sort of pain for 1 week but it wasn't excruciating pain.
2 weeks after i got them removed they started swelling again so i went back to the surgery place and they told me it was infected and they popped my swollen cheek and they basically uninfected it. it wasn't that big of a deal.
Reply:You should be fine, as long as you keep up the oral care. Healing will take about 2 and a half weeks, but as long as you keep up the post surgical regimen, you should be free of any discomfort within 2 to 3 days.
Reply:OUCH! I remember having this done, and it has been a long time ago. I do not envy you one bit. However, your pain and discomfort will pass. If you do what your dentist told you to do about the care and procedures of keeping things out of the holes, etc. You should be fine. Take your pain medicine when forced to do so, but don't become reliable upon that. Most of us just learn to cope and deal with the pain. And... stop worrying. Did you know it is a sin to worry? It really is. You just make yourself more tense and anxious. Give your worries to God. He is up all night anyway. :%26gt;
Reply:The peak of post surgical pain is 24 hours after the surgery, so now that you have passed this peak, there is a little chance that your pain will get worse. To reduce the chance of dry socket I always tell my patients to do not produce a suction in their mouth for a week ( NO drinking from a straw, NO smoking, No spiting).

Brown Stains on TEETH?
Brown stains on teeth: how do they occur on an adult. They appeared after I had my teeth cleaned at the dentist. Most Answers seem to feel that NOTHING can be done about it. Please don't reply to my question if you have already replied.
I have handled almost any medical problem - myself on the Net. So - what is the solution to get of these brown marks on teeth - and how did I cause them?

Reply:Hi, Brown stains are usually caused by strong coffee or tea.
Smoking also causes them, but you say you have recently had your teeth cleaned. You can buy Euthymol or another pipe smoker's toothpaste which has a 'gritty' consistency. This may do it. Otherwise, it's back to the dentist for anothr clean.
Hope this helps.
Reply:From my knowledge, you have an exogenous, extrinsic stain caused by dental fluoride...know as stannous fluoride. This is a rare side effect from products with stannous fluoride. If you have recently changed your toothpaste you may want to switch to one with less fluoride. It could also be from the fluoride treatment from your dental visit. These stains are removable, so I would contact your dentist.
Reply:Yes,coffee, tea, redwine etc are major culprits. Also the age of the person. After eating or drinking try to mouth wash as much as possible.
Reply:Brown stains on teeth (unless they were always present) are usually caused by tobacco, coffee, tea, food etc.
Just because you got your teeth cleaned, doesn't mean that the the stain can't or won't return. I have patients who because of their diet and home care get staining on their teeth several days after they have been cleaned.
So get your teeth cleaned again and if this handles the stain, make sure you understand what you need to do with your homecare to keep the stain from returning.
Sounds like you caused them, so you can get rid of them but it won't happen by majic on the net. It will happen when you get them cleaned and handle the cause.
Good luck - you'll be fine!!

BROWN STAINS ON TEETH: How are they usually formed. And what is the solution for getting rid of them?
OK. This is my third time in asking. So I've figured out that my brown stains on my teeth are not 'dental fluorosis'; NEITHER do I partake of tobacco, tea, coffee or red wine. So it's not that! A Dentist on Yahoo Answers replied that I should go back to the dentist and give him more money to fix the problem. Well, I could. But THEN - he also went on to say that after coming home, I should figure out what I'm doing wrong. Mmm - that's why my friends on the Internet are there for. The problem occured after I had returned from the dentist to have my teeth cleaned. Before that I was using a battery operated toothbrush that obviously wasn't doing the trick. So two questions: a) how do I get my teeth back to normal FROM HOME any websites would help (but what I really need is someone who has done it for themselves and b) what do I look for in an electric/or battery powered brush?
BROWN STAINS ON TEETH: How are they usually formed. And what is the solution for getting rid of them?
Coca cola, soda, chocolate, tea, coffee cause brown spots. Just go to a dentist and he'll get rid of them or use bleach.
Reply:Eating crap or smoking so brush like mad.
Reply:There are whitening strips you can use. If you drink cola, it will cause your teeth to stain, also.
Reply:u need a brush that has a battery that makes the little brush spikes spin automaticly
Reply:your friends on the internet are not there to solve your problems, they are not dentists, follow your dentists advice.

Sensitive Teeth?
I had my teeth cleaned and whitened, and my teeth are so sensitive, they hurt bad! Anyone know what can help, I tried floride and ambasol, oragel, I just dont know what else I can try.. any suggestion?
Sensitive Teeth?
this is a fairly common symptom after whitning teeth.use some sensitive toothpaste..brush with it and apply along the teeth with finger and just let it sit there for a while..
Reply:Go back to the dentist that treated you and tell them.
Reply:try warm water with salt it will help in case you have swollen gums
Reply:Whitening teeth can cause moderate to extreme sensitivity. That's just normal because of the properties in whitening solutions. Even over the counter whitening is still too harsh for me. This should wear off soon for you. If you have sensitive teeth, I would not use any type of whitening solution unless it's for sensitive teeth. The only toothpast I can use now is for sensitive teeth. All others I can't tolerate.

I Cant afford to get my teeth fixed..... I live in North Texas ! Someone give me advice.?
I have been dodging dental work with the benefit of having insurance because it still cost too much. For atleast 5 years now I have been going to dentist to have my teeth cleaned only to be told that I need to get this fixed or that fixed..... Ive had to make payments for each procedure - each time I could only come back when my balance was paid... Only to be told the same thing.... Come back and I have to fix this. Ive only had my teeth cleaned 2 times out of 5 years and I had to make a sceen to get it done. Now Im faced with probably 3 to 4 crowns and they want to charge me $700-$800 per tooth with insurance. I cant afford it - I can barely make a car note. I have 3 children. Im about to have a nervous break down. Someone please give me some advice. I live in North Texas.

change your present dentist.they are rude
the other thing you can do is talk to a good dentist ahead of getting services about paymwnt plan so you can pay them a certain amount each month.
do not shatter your nerves on this matter..there is always a way.
talk to your friends, I am sure someone will give you a good openion.

Reply:check with your local hospital to see if they can refer you to a dental school in the area - sometimes the dental school will perform procedures for little or no cost - your work would of course be done by someone who is not a licensed dentist but would be completely overseen by a dentist - with vitually no risk.
good luck - i am in the same situaltion!!

I Cant afford to get my teeth fixed..... I live in North Texas ! Someone give me advice.?
I have a discounted dental plan that should help with the costs. Check it out at http://www.everyonebenefits.com/LMota

look for a good college of DENTISTRY in your area............they teach new students on you but always professors supervise.
change your present dentist.they are rude
the other thing you can do is talk to a good dentist ahead of getting services about paymwnt plan so you can pay them a certain amount each month.
do not shatter your nerves on this matter..there is always a way.
talk to your friends, I am sure someone will give you a good openion.

Teeth whitening?
i was wondering, does rinsing your mouth with hydrogen peroxide make your teeth whiter over time? my cousin said that it worked for her. she also said that she got the idea from her friend who was in the army and she said that they used it to keep their teeth clean.
Teeth whitening?
Yes, over time. But do not use it full strength, since it is damaging to the gums. It does, however take a VERY long time, and you may find that whitening strips or the process of lazers at your dentist (zoom) will do the trick faster
Reply:flavored toothpaste makes you want to brush so in turn gets you whiter teeth but don't brush anymore than 2 min. Report It
Reply:Total crap...u wil inturn spoil ur teeth...jus use a good toothpaste
Reply:crest white strips work great.i buy mine on Ebay-cheaper!
Reply:I always thought it was bad to ingest hydrogen peroxide. If they're fine and it works you might as well go ahead. I personally like the Rembrandt whitening strips though!
Reply:That is kind of gross.........but I know that baking soda works every now and than put some on your toothbrush ,but not all the time it will take the enamel off.
Reply:crest white strips work good but if you dont want to spend alot of money try listerine whiting use it before you brush everytime and it takes a little longer than whitestripes but it works
Reply:Yep it works.
Reply:Strange enough, Ultrabright tooth paste( the cheap stuff) really works. I use colgate white night brush on stuff too.
Baking soda works but tastes bad.
Some tooth pasted have peroxide in them like mentadent, but I didn't see any results from it.
Reply:give it a shot
Reply:yeah it works cus i have some rebrandt whiteing stuff and the mouth wash u use first is basiclly that only a little diluted with water but it should whiten ur teeth but make sure to brush too lol :)

Can you ever brush you're teeth TOO MUCH? (read details)?
Okay, so since I'm soon getting braces, for some reason I've had this weird obsession to brush my teeth like every two hours (basically right after I eat ANYTHING)!! I don't have the braces yet, but I'm getting some on Tuesday I believe, and I got spacers. For some reason I've just really have been brushing my teeth VERY VERY often. Is it ever possible to "over brush?" Like maybe if you brush so often that your enamel starts to wear away? It's kind of a weird idea but things pop into my head, so I'm just wondering. I know brushing your teeth after almost every meal helps break down plaque and keep your teeth clean, but to me it seems obsessive, and with my idea, I'm wondering. Please, is it ever possible to brush your teeth TOO MUCH?
Can you ever brush you're teeth TOO MUCH? (read details)?
Brushing right after you eat anything is a good idea and is not too much. As long as you brush correctly, you are brushing the ends of enamel rods and they are very resistant to wearing. If you are brushing incorrectly, brushing across the front surfaces instead of up and down, you can wear grooves in the cementum just below the crown or you can cut enamel rods and wear the enamel away.
Reply:Thanks :) Report It
Reply:Doing anything too much is always a problem. If you are using a soft bristle brush, it probably isn't a BIG problem, but you may have to overcome this obsession. You do have to brush more often with braces cause stuff gets stuck and you don't want to be digging around in there with toothpicks and other stuff.
Try being really gentle when brushing...you'll still get all the "icky" stuff out.
Reply:Just be careful that you are not brushing your teeth too hard or you may wear away your enamel. Also if you drink pop or orange juice or have any kind of citrus fruit, do not brush your teeth right away, wait at least an hour, since the acids soften your enamel brushing would cause the enamel to wear away more easily.

Is anyone else obcessed with teeth?
I am obcessed with teeth. It's the first thing I notice. I have had to stopped eating with some of our friends because I don't like the way their teeth are cared for. Also, my husband doesn't care for his teeth and I find myself constantly looking in his mouth. I have had to beg him to get his teeth cleaned. It hurts his feelings, but I cannot help myself. His eat are not really even bad. They are just not perfect! I find myself sickened by people with stained and broken teeth. Is anyone else like this?
Is anyone else obcessed with teeth?
I have to admit, I am a bit guilty of this myself. But I often try to separate myself from my job as often as I can. I make a conscious effort not to stare at peoples teeth when I am not at work. I could drive myself nuts walking around thinking of all the different things that I could do to fix up people's smiles! The important thing is not to judge people by their teeth, Dr. Sam hit upon this, not every one has or has had access to good care. Trying to fix years of neglect often can get quite expensive and not everyone can afford to do it. Also, many people are self-conscious of their teeth, especially if they know that they have problems already. Try and take it easy on them and try to make them feel good about themselves!

Why do my teeth hurt after biting certain things?
Have this issue with my teeth... biting finger nails on certain teeth will hurt. usually fixed by a teeth clean.
And eating certain chocolate, my teeth with hurt. e.g mars bars and crunchys always hurt, but snickers or twix don't hurt at all.
Is there an explanation? is it just me? might ask my dentist when I go next.. whenever that is
Why do my teeth hurt after biting certain things?
It could be the start of a cavity or it could be recession, could be from clenching your teeth, or the bite could be high, very hard to tell without clinical examination. Best bet, go vist your DDS.

Does anyone here think that "bad teeth" are genetic..reason is ...is because?
I was in the dentist office all the time when I was a young child. My mom and dad tried so hard to keep my teeth in proper order. I had a mouth full of silver crowns on my baby teeth because of cavities etc. I can remember brushing and being made to keep my teeth clean. As an adult, I still have the same problems. I have teeth that have roots as long and big as you can imagine but they decay so fast. The teeth that are filled eventually lose the filling like for instance today..I had to go back to the dentist and get a filling in the front...my front teeth were filled like six years ago. My entire family has had dental problems forever..whats the deal?? am I headed for false teeth?
Does anyone here think that "bad teeth" are genetic..reason is ...is because?
My grandson was 4 when most of his teeth were pulled, his brother was 5, their aged 3 brother has only 1 cavity at the moment. When the 4 yr. old had surgery, the dentist said that it was a combination of genes and the fact that their Mom had bad teeth and probably passed it on to her boys from the usual things Moms everywhere do for their kids. Esp. kissing. If she had known not to feed from her plate, shared glasses, etc., they and she would have been spared so much pain. I also had bad teeth. Also, medications during pregnancy can play a part. So, when people get nosy and ask why, refer them to their dentist. My daughter never gave up the kisses.
Reply:no i dont think its genetic i just think its cuz u probably just eat too much candy or gum or jus ne thing that has too much sugar but dats only wat i think
Reply:I think it's a combination of genetics and the way you care for your teeth. A study has been done that relates tooth decay to heart disease, which has been proven to also be genetic.
Reply:I was told by dentist that more than likely if your parents had bad teeth you will too. Everytime I go in I have something else. My daughter has had five teeth pulled and the rest filled all by the age of 7. I guess this is just one more thing we can blame our parents for.
Reply:yes and my family has that same problem its hereditary and u cant change it
Reply:Yes, I do think that "bad teeth" are genetic because my mother's family all have permanent teeth missing and so does my mother so I have one permenent tooth missing in which I will have to get an implant and my brother has four permenent teeth missing and he has braces to fill in the spaces.
Reply:maby I'm not really sure................................. but i wish u the best of luck.
Reply:I personally believe that bad teeth are genetic. My nieces have really bad teeth like their mom. They always go to the dentist and try to do their best, but I think it's genetic, just like eye sight or just about anything else. I know how you feel though, both of my parents have bad teeth and I'm surffering the reprocussions of it. Of course they never took me to the dentist even though they preached to all the time that i should take care of my teeth. They didn't have the money or any insurance to take me. Just keep going to the dentist and brush you teeth a lot is all I can say. Look for toothpastes that don't contain sugar. I've actually heard some do! If you don't like the way you dentist takes care of things, try someone else. Good luck!
Reply:it is possibly genetic but your surrounding factors are also influences - for example most Japanese people (im not saying ALL) have bad teeth because it is expensive ..so they don't bother fixing their teeth - and it passes down to their next generation,,having bad teeth.
But anyways it is all up to you - you gotta take care of your own teeth.. and prevent the worse. I myself have to do that too cuz i just had a root canal and if i don't take care of that tooth it'll rot n i'll be forced to make fake teeth!!
We just gotta brush our teeth everytime after eating (especially eating sweet stuff) ..

My cat and his teeth?
My cat looks like he has some bad teeth so i want to take him to the vet. he's around 10 years old and i'm not sure what they will want to do on him. Maybe clean his teeth or something. But i just would like to see some answers on if he'd be okay to get his teeth cleaned and if anyone knows the cost of doing this or an estimate
My cat and his teeth?
Your cat will most likely have to be anesthetized to have any dental work done. But before any work is done, a vet will usually want to do bloodwork (blood test) to make sure surgery is safe.
The tests usually cost around $75.
If everything is ok, your pet will be scheduled for surgery, usually to include a teeth scaling and cleaning. You should be able to bring the cat home that day. This may cost anywhere from $80-200 depending upon the facility.
If the cat has 'bad teeth' discovered while in surgery, they will have to be extracted. This can cost between $75 and 900 depending upon how many teeth require extraction.
This all sounds like a lot, but it is well worth the cost, as neglected mouth problems can cause serious health issues.
Once this is done, you can keep up maintenance at home with brushing and rinsing (otherwise, you may be back in a year with the same problems).
Just a caution. It is recommended that you use an 'experienced' vet perform extractions on your cat. Extractions are very intricate in cats and should only be performed by an experienced, skilled and patient vet that has the proper equipment. Most 'general purpose' vets do not do a proper job at this and may result in more problems.
Reply:He will need his teeth cleaned and probably have to have them pulled. He may need to be put on antibiotics. Any time an animal or person is anesthetized there is some risk, but cleaner teeth will keep him healthier. Estimates are $60 to $300 depending on where you live, whether they require bloodwork due to his age, and how many teeth he will need pulled. You can call the vets for estimates or take him in and ask their opinion for price of an exam.
Reply:Being 10 yrs old, I would suggest getting some basic blood work done.....a mini chemistry and cbc ( cost around $60) that will tell them alot....any problems that they need to know about before anesthesia for teeth cleaning. Usually dental cleaning with an ultra sonic scaler will cost you around $90, they will charge for iv catheter and fluids if they use them and pulse oximiter monitoring. Usually they can't tell if any teeth will need to be extracted until they get in and start cleaning.
If you want pain medication dispensed after the cleaning that will be extra.....if they remove teeth there will be a charge for antibiotics.
I would call your vet and ask questions about what they charge and what is included in a dental cleaning. All vets are a bit different. The basic charge for a dental cleaning at the hospital that I work at is $230.....does not include antibiotics, pain medication or extractions or dental xrays. But does include anesthesia, blood work, iv catheter and fluids, pulse oximitor monitoring, ultra sonic scaling and polishing, flouride treatment.

White Teeth? READ BEFORE YOU ANSWER?
I don't know why but my teeth are yellow. I don't drink coffee, tea, soda, etc. I brush my teeth twice daily and the only thing I could think of is that I ate almost nothing but grapefruit for like 2 weeks a month ago. I've tried the apple thing, useing the crest and listerine whittening strips, baking soda, strawberries, lemons, whittening tooth pastes and I've even had my teeth cleaned by the dentist and nothing is working! Does anyone have any NATURAL solutions to my problems?

And she said shes been using Crest White Strips Premium for years..
So apparently they work really good!

Reply:Teeth come in different shades, the same as skin and hair. This was explained to me by a very wise dentist when I was very young. He explained to me that I have an enzime in my saliva that actually makes my tooth enamel harder than normal. It also makes my teeth slightly yellow as a side effect. It is a good thing overall because it discourages tooth decay. That dentist taught me to be more concerned about dental health than appearance. I hope this will encourage you to have the same concern.

Crowded and protruding teeth. I NEED HELP!?
i have mild crowding and overlapping (wait, is that redundant?) in both my upper and lower teeth. and one of my front teeth is protruding and covering part the little incisor beside it. i also have a slight overbite. overall, my teeth don't look so bad but those problems make it hard to keep my teeth clean.
i've heard about invisalign but i don't really understand what it is and how it works. also, can braces fix my teeth? what treatment would be best for me?
thanks.
Crowded and protruding teeth. I NEED HELP!?
Invisalign is a trademark for plastic appliances which fit over the biting edges of teeth and move them. As the teeth move you will have to insert different appliances. In my opinion, this is only for minor tooth problems while the majority of cases need to be rectified with braces. You need to be evaluated by an Orthodontist to find out what treatment is best for you.
Reply:It sounds like our teeth are kind of in the same condition, mine are crowded as well. Yes, braces can align your teeth (I got mine put it about a month ago). I'm not sure what invasalign is but from what the other guy posted I'm guessing that braces are a better option.

anyway since u are worried about ur teeth i hope this helps.
1. Get a check up with ur local dentist or community health centre depending on u. and ask for their recommendation.
2. braces should be able to straighten ur teeth.
but keep in mind. that since ur teeth are overcrowded does ur mouth have space accommodate them if they are straighten? if not then its most likely that u will have a tooth or so taken out.
3. when trying to straighten ur teeth things come into consideration such as ur occlusion or other words ur bite. whether or not ur upper and lower jaw bite together properly after the process. which ur dental health professional should take care of anyway.
4. umm not sure about this but in some cases such as my one...my lower jaw may be reduced cos its too big...but i won't go into that.
I wanted to get braces too at one stage but apparently my teeth weren't exactly crooked or anything....just tiny gaps here and there that gave the look. and instead my dentist just gave me an aesthetic material to build up my tooth so its looks a lil bigger and reduce the gaps. ppl think i have braces though. hope this helps ^^

i've heard about invisalign but i don't really understand what it is and how it works. also, can braces fix my teeth? what treatment would be best for me?

Clean cats, teeth and all?
As I'm getting a new cat in a month. another concern of mine is dental hygiene. My grandma's cats have gross smelling breath and teeth from improper care. So what are the best cleaning methods? Also, is it really nessisary to bathe a cat(indoor cat)? tips on a clean litter box area?
Clean cats, teeth and all?
No, you don't need to bathe cats. They are self-cleaning like ovens.
If you can brush or wipe your cat's teeth, that's great. However if you can't there are other things you can do.
Give them raw chicken necks to chew on. That's what I do. This is how nature intended them to keep their teeth clean. After all, Mother Nature doesn't brush their teeth, nor do their mothers!
Look into supplements to add to the water or the food. C.E.T. Dental makes one, as does Wysong. There's also a product called PlaqueOff.
The one thing that won't help is dry food. It will not clean their teeth. Not even the cleverly marketed "dental" foods they're now making. Save your money!
Reply:Get a good quality (Science Diet, Iams, etc.) DRY cat food, that will keep the teeth and breath in good shape. We give ours a little bit of Fancy Feast Can food just as a treat now and then.
You don't have to bathe an indoor cat, they are very good at keeping themselves clean.
Get a good cat litter, tidy cat multiple cats is good. Get a big empty coffee can with a good lid. Put it next to the litter box.
Every night, scoop out the lumps and clumps, put them in the coffee can and keep the lid on tight. When it gets full, throw it in the trash and start a new one.
Reply:I have had indoor and outdoor cats. The indoor cats do tend to shed more so I would recommend brushing, but not bathing. Cats are very clean and they have special oils in their fur that shouldn't be washed out.
As far as teeth, keep an eye on the teeth and when they start getting stains or build-up, the vet will clean them. The vet sedates the cat so it doesn't struggle while having them cleaned. The litter box should never have much odor if you scoop every day. Use a dust-free scoopable cat littler and there are little mats you can buy to cut down on tracking the litter out of the box.
Also, I have a female Siamese that cannot eat dry food with artificial coloring. That can tend to give them urinary problems. I feed my indoor cat a dry food for indoor cats that is free of by-products and artificial coloring. They both eat it and the Siamese also eats some canned food.
This is a lot of info, but cats are so easy to have and so clean, except for hair and so nice to keep inside. There is also hairball remedy that I would recommend getting from the vet.
I hope this helped with your new cat.
I love cats and always like to see them get a good home.
Reply:Feed your cat a high quality food like Science Diet - it is good for your cat in general, not just its teeth.
No, you do not clean a cat - they hate water! Cats are self-cleaning.
Get a litter box with a hood or cover on it. That way when the cat buries its "treasure" it won't kick litter on the floor outside the litter box. Clean the litter box out daily!!
Cats are really pretty easy pets to own.
Reply:Regular play with the cat with chew toys(to an extent) will help with their teeth, also there are products on the market now for that. Dry cat food does prevent tooth problems....not helps with existing ones, but helps to prevent it. That is the difference. You definitely do want to feed it dry food. You do not have to bathe an indoor cat, however, I always bathed mine that were indoors. They did not like it at first, just like a dog, but they got used to it, and then you had to fight them for the tub. Place a mat in front of the litter box to catch what the cat tracks out of it. Also, get the scoopable and scoop it daily as the other answerer suggested. One other thing that we did was kept fake nails on ours to keep him from scratching things in the house. Most cats will learn not to, but we did this anyway since we had very small children at the time. It is called soft paws, and they are acrylic nails that glue and slide over the cats nails. They even come in colors. We used red and green for him during Christmas time.
Reply:Dry cat food, Greenies treats are good too for keeping teeth clean.
They also make toothbrushes for cats. If you start when they are young enough, it won't be a big deal. And, naturally, veterinary dental care.
No, it isn't really necessary to bathe a cat - he is indoor, so he will bathe himself/herself. I give my cat a bath on very rare occasions, but I mean very rarely. Baths will dry your cats skin out, and give them problems.
I have a rug under my cats box - if you get one with a cover, it helps keep the litter in the box vs. on the floor. Cats will kick it around. Scoop it daily - or you can get a Litter Maid that will automatically scoop after the cat has done his/her business.
Congrats on your pending new addition!

Teeth Whitening and Braces?
I'm getting my braces off on Monday and I really wanna whiten my teeth for school, but when i was getting my teeth cleaned the dentist said that you cant whiten your teeth for about 6 months afterwards?? is that true? and does anyone know why??!!!
Teeth Whitening and Braces?
i wouldn't whiten your teeth if you are under 18 because if you are younger, the nerves of your teeth are still close to the surface enamel so whitening them could damage the nerve endings and cause possible tooth loss later on in life, or maybe just dental problems down the road. use whitening tooth paste 2 to 3 times a day though, and floss.
good luck!
Reply:idk never had braces
Reply:I believe they told me the same thing. Not sure why, maybe your teeth are weakened from the braces and need some time to 'recover' before they're whitened (and weakened).
Reply:Generally speaking, you can get your teeth whitened after braces, but some factors to consider waiting would be: 1. Any new cavities should be treated first, 2. Your teeth may already be sensitive and whitening nearly always makes them more so, 3. If you have any problems needing fixed with your front teeth, that should be addressed before bleaching is started. If none of these apply to you, you can always get a second opinion from another doctor. Hope this helps.

Dogs teeth?
I checked with the Vet and to get my dogs teeth cleaned its almost impossible to afford. Any one have any ideas I can do at home to maybe clean them or freshen their breath? Don't know what else to do. I have a toy poodle and have tried brushing his teeth, but that dosen't really help. Open to any suggestions. Thank you.
Dogs teeth?
just keep trying to brush them yourself. the dog will get used to it and it will be easier as time goes by. good luck
Reply:You can carry on cleaning her teeth as this help, but in addition you could try fresh breath tablets and fresh breath chews.
Reply:It's true-dogs do get periodontal disease and might benefit from dental care, but most of their problems, like ours, are diet driven. A good dogfood and minimal table scraps will help your pet. As for the breath, it's called 'dog breath' for a reason. It does not resolve easily by any means.

Need advice on brushing teeth of unhappy 3 yr old?
My grandson hates having his teeth cleaned. He has tooth decay on his front teeth and my daughter has been battling this issue for well over a year now. The situation is so bad that he has to be held down while his teeth are being brushed and he kicks and screams the whole process thru. Afterwards he is still really upset for while.
We've tried getting him to do them himself but he refuses or does not do the job properly. We've tried different toothbrushes including electric %26amp; novelty ones, different toothpaste and no toothpaste at all but nothing helps. I thought perhaps it was painful for him, but have been told that baby teeth don't have the nerve endings of aduilt teeth, so this is doubtful.
There has to be a better way to care for his teeth! Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Need advice on brushing teeth of unhappy 3 yr old?
let him brush your teeth if you can brush his
let him brush in the bathtub
develop a rewards system to let him get something he wants. if you brush his teeth 2 times a day for 1 month he gets to go to the movies (game, toy, etc...)
let him pick out his own toothbrush and toothpaste
if he is 3 and has decay he probably should see a dentist. they can also give you tips on how to get him to let you brush.
Reply:My sister gets her daughter to clean her teeth by distracting her with a story book or the promise of some crunchy apple/carrot afterwards.
In order to make sure Jasmin cleans her tetth thoroughly my sister sings Baa baa black sheep to her 3 times, making a mistake at the last line 'so having to start over again'. Maybe the brush is too hard?
Reply:Tell hi....it is candy....you can also buy....candy flavored toothpaste.....if all of this fails....just don't attempt to brush his teeth anymore....because sooner or later all of his teeth will fall out of his head....and you will not have to worry about ever brushing them again....however if this occurs the youngster will be rich and the tooth-fairy will be happy.....good luck and be an adult and don't let the little 3 year-old out wit you like he has done his mother....Good Luck Gramps...
Reply:If he has visible decay on his front teeth, there's a good chance that they HURT, and brushing just intensifies it.
Get that little boy to a pediatric dentist and have the teeth taken care of... once the pain is gone, he'll probably be more cooperative with brushing........ and make sure the bottle is in the trash.

Post dental cleaning thing.. gap?
I went and got my teeth cleaned and found that when my hygenist removed the plaque buildup behind my lower front teeth, I have this gap type thing where it used to be. It doesn't hurt me and my gums aren't bleeding, and my teeth aren't sensitive to hot/cold or any foods I'm eating, but I'm curious as to if there's anything I can do to relieve this temporarily or if something happens within time, like the gums grow into the gap and fill it like they normally do. It's not a huge gap, it's just where one of my teeth goes behind another one of my teeth from how they're crookedly set. Thanks in advance. :)
Post dental cleaning thing.. gap?
the tarter had filled up the gaps in between the tooth. The gum has been destroyed by the tarter. Once it is removed , gaps form, see to that the gap is maintained %26amp; do not allow food to collect again or the next time after claening more gaps will form.
Reply:if gum tissue was removed during the cleaning then most likely it will grow back. you can always go back to the dentist and ask them since on your x rays it will show where the gum was previously. you can give about a week or so to see the gum growing back
Reply:you are just not use to it it will go away

How painful is a dental cleaning? Also, if I am on a beta blocker could I still have a dental cleaning?
I am terrified of having my teeth cleaned because I suffer from TMJ and I just hate getting my teeth scraped or cleaned with that tooth by the hygenist's hand or that mechanical tool that really scrapes your teeth hard, any help in answering my question is appreciated.
How painful is a dental cleaning? Also, if I am on a beta blocker could I still have a dental cleaning?
Call your dentist ahead of time with your concerns. Some dentists will prescribe something to relax you if it is truly that bad.
Reply:It's more annoying than painful. You will bleed but there is no real damage. If it gets really bad, the hygienist might be able to put you on nitrous oxide. I've never needed it, though.
Reply:Painless.
It will be absolutely painless.
In fact, you might like it because it massages you're teeth because of the vibrations from the cleaning tooth.
No, they won't use that annoying scraper tool that feels nasty when I assist the dentist on a patient and use that tool.
So you have nothing to worry about.
They also let you pick the paste flavor for the tool.
It will be all fine unless you have gingivitis.
Reply:As for as being terrified, I would recommend speaking with the dentist. He could give you local anesthesia to numb your mouth or if you don't like needles, he could give you something to sedate you, usually a sedative pill. Being on a Beta blocker is actually beneficial since it controls your blood pressure and keeps your heart rate down.
Reply:you should ask if the dental office has a "TENS Unit" or you should look into buying one for yourself if your TMD is bad. That will help relax your joint.
Pain is individual perception it shouldn't hurt and if you need a deeper cleaning you can have anesthetic or Nitrous so you don't feel it.
If you are anxious call ahead and ask for an anti anxiety prescription.
If the scraping bothers you bring head phones.
And finally a Beta Blocker is not an excuse to get out of a dental cleaning!
Reply:you dont need to go to the dentist for cleaning if you do proper brushing %26amp; flossing every day. There is no problem if you are on beta blockers. If you had a pace maker placed in your heart, you have to inform the dentist.

Help with my teeth!?
I'm the same way. STOP COKE AND PEPSI NOW. I know it's hard, especially if you crave the sugar and caffiene, like I do-- but you HAVE to go with the diet versions. It is the raw simple sugars that are doing it. All those celebrities like Beyonce and Britney and the American Idol team don't really drink it, they just advertise that they do to make money. Plus they can all afford $250,000 in implants if they needed them, lol. Gatorade, Mountain Dew and all the other sugary soft drinks and fruit juices that the other posters have listed are the same way. It sucks, but you have to do it. If you do not, "I didn't listen when I was younger", you will lose some teeth by age 30 AND have paid atleast $20,000 in fillings being redone over and over again and root canals and crowns by the time you are 30. When I stopped, my decay rate slowed to a stop almost. I drink tea with artificial sweetners, diet sodas, coffee with artificial sweetener. One sweetener that tastes like sugar is STEVIA and it has no effect on your teeth. FROM A FELLOW DENTAL SUFFERER, IF YOU DON'T STOP THE SUGAR, YOUR DENTAL PROBLEMS AND BILLS GET WORSE AND WORSE. I am 30 now so I know. Your dentist should give you a prescription called PREVIDENT, it's a prescription flouride paste you put on your teeth every nite to strengthen them. Good luck, floss, and keep your sugary intake to a minimum.
Reply:I'd suggest a couple things. Do you drink enough milk (or eat dairy products)? It could be that even though your hygiene is good, that your teeth are suffering structurally from poor nutrition. You need to also make sure you are getting enough vitamin D and C. You may also want to try cutting down on the sweets in your diet. If you are consuming caffeinated products or smoking this will also affect the strength of your enamel.
Good luck!
Reply:had the same problem. stay away from hard candy especially sour candy.(like sour punch and warheads) . Cokes and stuff are bad too. other than that you should get better.
Reply:If you take as good care of your teeth as you say you do, then the only other thing you may need to change is some of the things in your diet. The following things can cause decay:
Fruit juice
Squash
Sweets
Chocolate
Fizzy drinks
Sugar in tea/ coffee
If you are having a lot of any of the above things then these could be contributing to your decay.
Adding milk/ diary to your diet is very unlikely to help unless your a child and your teeth are still forming.
Unfortunately the other thing to remember is that the strength of your teeth depends allot on genetics.
Keep up with your oral hygiene routine and make any changes to your diet you can.

Reply:If you drink mountain dew or sports drinks like Gatorade, stop it immediately. They will eat up you teeth no matter how much you brush. Also after your last brushing before you go to bed don't eat or drink anything anymore besides water. Don't chew on lemons or gum that has sugar in it. Stay away from sour and sticky candy. Rinse with water after you drink sodas. You may also want to use a fluoride rinse and/or a toothpaste for sensitive teeth. You may also have acid reflux. It can weaken your enamel big time.
But the main purpose we discover is mountain dew. Seriously it should have a warning label. It costs our patients thousands of dollars after only consuming it for 6 month because it has a high amount of acid besides the load of sugar.
Reply:Try chewing sugar free gum. It's a good way to remove food from between your teeth when you can't brush/floss.
Crest has a new toothpaste out called Pro Health that fights (or claims to) cavities, gingivitis, plaque build up, sensitivity, tartar build up, a whitener, and freshens breath~ wow! It's a bit expensive but may be worth a try.
And 10/10 dentists will tell you that, given the choice of brushing or flossing, they'd taking flossing hands down so make time to take time to floss properly. It's worth it!
Seeing your dentist every 6 months will help him nip little problems in the bud so don't put him off. And lots of people have to be desensitized before a 'deep cleaning', me included. Cheers!
Reply:well i have cavities, and my teeth are crooked. and i dont even go to the dentist. soo..help me out.

Tablets to make sure your teeth are clean when wearing braces. How do I use them and when?
I just got my braces today and my othrodontist gave me some tablets that are pink. (4 of them). She said this will determine if my teeth are clean but I forgot if I'm suppose to dissolve them or just chew them to show any left over plaque. Please help.
Tablets to make sure your teeth are clean when wearing braces. How do I use them and when?
Chew up the tab after brushing. Swish around a little then spit out the excess. Don't rinse. Any place there is plaque the pink will stick. This shows you where to brush better. You can use them whenever you want. Try them for the first few days until you get used to where you need to brush. After that just use one randomly to make sure you are still cleaning properly
Reply:The tablets are called disclosing tablets, and are used to check for places that were missed when brushing.
There is also a liquid disclosing solution that's available at your pharmacy as well.
Just chew one after eating/brushing. I would suggest you did it when you don't have to go anywhere, like after dinner or at bedtime, because your teeth/mouth will turn red from the stain....and I'm sure you wouldn't want anyone to see that.
Best of luck with your braces!

Do you brush your dogs teeth?
hi i have a 13 month old cavalier king charles ,he has a dentrixstick every day to make his teeth clean but should i brush them as well? i was told clean teeth , good heart and as cavaliers tend to have heart problems when they are older should i brush them as well , is it true about clean teeth good heart??
Do you brush your dogs teeth?
I brush my dogs teeth every night. It is recommended that you brush their teeth 3-5 times a week, or as often as you can. I do recommend brushing your pups teeth, even though you mentioned you give him a dentastick. Dentasticks (or any other bones) should not be a replacement for tooth brushing. I perform about 6 dentals a week and I can absolutely tell if a dog gets their teeth brushed. It makes a huge difference. It can add 3-5 years to a dogs life.
Reply:No
Reply:No. You can buy in pet shops something that dogs eat and it cleans his teet.
Reply:I don't brush my dog's teeth. She eats raw, so her teeth are perfectly white.
Reply:I bush my all three of my Border Collie's teeth. They hate it but its good for them. :]
Just make sure that you use doggie toothpaste.
Reply:i wouldn't keep your dog safe
Reply:no
Reply:It is true that bad teeth do affect the heart. Do his teeth look like they are dirty or have alot of plaque? Does he have bad breath? I don't brush the dog's teeth, don't have to, they are perfectly white and no plaque at all. Some breeds tho have worse teeth than others and need that extra care.
Reply:you don't have to some dog foods freshens breath and cleans teeth
Reply:I give mine pigs ears and their teeth are bright, white and plaque free. I keep an eye on them as well as their gums. If I see the teeth getting to be a problem I plan on brushing.
Reply:My dogs are all raw fed as well and have lovely clean teeth, even my 10-12 year old husky/Rottie mix (who came to me with terrible teeth). Give them a raw knucklebone in their crate to work on once a week will help a lot.
Reply:yes you should. there are some exceptions as some people mentioned, like feeding raw, that may lessen the need to do so. but generally speaking yes you should clean the dogs teeth. but it is something that you have to sonsistently do or it makes no difference. brushing them once a month isnt going to do much, but brushing them at least 5 times a week will. and as it is very easy to do, it saves you money at a vet visit.
Reply:My dogs eat a Greenie every other day and on the days they dont eat a Greenie they get their teeth brushed. I believe that tooth brushing is necessary with or without the Greenies. You should probably start brushing your dogs teeth a couple of times a week.
Reply:Yes I brush my guys teeth. There is a connection between teeth and the heart even for us humans.
I would say brush them now he needs to get use to it and he is still young. Many tiems older dogs do not take will to teeth brushing if they were not use to it as pups.
Reply:yea i brush my dogs teeth or they get yellow and his breath smells like crap

Teeth cleanings once a year instead of twice...?
I've been getting my teeth cleaned twice a year for over 10 years and they cost nearly $100 each time. Next week I'm going to ask my dentist if I can start getting them cleaned only once a year from now on, but I was just curious if anyone here has done this and what the effects were on your teeth... Thanks.
cheers,
Shauna!
Teeth cleanings once a year instead of twice...?
i think once a year is ok
Reply:i have never had my teeth cleaned.
Reply:Be like most of Africa - use salt!
Reply:Well in your case, with the green teeth and all,it's best to stay with the twice a year schedule.
Reply:Gee...... I do mine only when i go to the dentist, like once in 5 years..... and its still clean.
Reply:First of all, $100/cleaning is very expensive. Get another dentist.
I have my teeth cleaned 4 times a year and each cleaning costs $60. Twice a year would be OK if you brush carefully and every day and if your teeth are in good condition.
Reply:When I visit my denist (which is not very often at all), he gives me an A+ report. On top of rare dentist visits, I only brush once a day. In spite of all the so-called neglect, my teeth are perfectly healthy(no cavities or anything). It might have some to do with the fact that I dont drink or smoke. If you dont drink or smoke I guess you should be fine. I know I sure am. Note: (Im 22yrs old)
Reply:i think it is ok to do a one year check on your teeth. it is not necessary to clean them at all if you are taking good care of them.
Reply:Getting your teeth cleaned twice a year is needed to remove plaque build up, and deep clean areas brushing and flossing dont. Also its the first step to detecting cavaties, and other oral health issues. If you go too long its going to be much more expensive and painfull to take care of later. Think root canals and extractions.Everyones oral chemisty is different. Some people can develop oral problems in a matter of a month or two, others can be fine for years. I would consider trying to find dental insurance, or supplemental coverage if you already have it. Some average $10 a month, and cheaper if connected to your health plan. And cleanings and basice services are usually covered. But if all your getting is cleanings $100 is kinda pricey, I would try dentist shopping. If not covered my cleanings would be $40 and I go to the best dentist hands down in my area.
Reply:How often you get your teeth cleaned depends on a lot of factors including the existing condition of them, how prone you are to cavities and decay, how well or how much you salivate, what kind of medications you might be taking, and any other medical conditions that may affect your teeth or mouth.
I would definitely not recommend that anyone have their teeth cleaned less than twice a year. Even if your teeth seem fine after a year of not having them cleaned you would be amazed at the difference if you had them cleaned after that amount of time. If your dentist is too expensive then shop around for someone cheaper instead of cutting back on visits. Having your teeth rot will be much more expensive and hard to deal with than having them cleaned twice a year. You can also set aside a little money each month so that when you do go to the dentist paying for it wont be so hard on you.
