How painful is a dental cleaning? Also, if I am on a beta blocker could I still have a dental cleaning?

I am terrified of having my teeth cleaned because I suffer from TMJ and I just hate getting my teeth scraped or cleaned with that tooth by the hygenist's hand or that mechanical tool that really scrapes your teeth hard, any help in answering my question is appreciated.

Call your dentist ahead of time with your concerns. Some dentists will prescribe something to relax you if it is truly that bad.
Reply:It's more annoying than painful. You will bleed but there is no real damage. If it gets really bad, the hygienist might be able to put you on nitrous oxide. I've never needed it, though.
Reply:Painless.

It will be absolutely painless.

In fact, you might like it because it massages you're teeth because of the vibrations from the cleaning tooth.

No, they won't use that annoying scraper tool that feels nasty when I assist the dentist on a patient and use that tool.

So you have nothing to worry about.

They also let you pick the paste flavor for the tool.

It will be all fine unless you have gingivitis.
Reply:As for as being terrified, I would recommend speaking with the dentist. He could give you local anesthesia to numb your mouth or if you don't like needles, he could give you something to sedate you, usually a sedative pill. Being on a Beta blocker is actually beneficial since it controls your blood pressure and keeps your heart rate down.
Reply:you should ask if the dental office has a "TENS Unit" or you should look into buying one for yourself if your TMD is bad. That will help relax your joint.

Pain is individual perception it shouldn't hurt and if you need a deeper cleaning you can have anesthetic or Nitrous so you don't feel it.

If you are anxious call ahead and ask for an anti anxiety prescription.

If the scraping bothers you bring head phones.

And finally a Beta Blocker is not an excuse to get out of a dental cleaning!
Reply:you dont need to go to the dentist for cleaning if you do proper brushing %26amp; flossing every day. There is no problem if you are on beta blockers. If you had a pace maker placed in your heart, you have to inform the dentist.
