Teeth cleanings once a year instead of twice...?

I've been getting my teeth cleaned twice a year for over 10 years and they cost nearly $100 each time. Next week I'm going to ask my dentist if I can start getting them cleaned only once a year from now on, but I was just curious if anyone here has done this and what the effects were on your teeth... Thanks.

cheers,

Teeth cleanings once a year instead of twice...?
i think once a year is ok
Reply:i have never had my teeth cleaned.
Reply:Be like most of Africa - use salt!
Reply:Well in your case, with the green teeth and all,it's best to stay with the twice a year schedule.
Reply:Gee...... I do mine only when i go to the dentist, like once in 5 years..... and its still clean.
Reply:First of all, $100/cleaning is very expensive. Get another dentist.

I have my teeth cleaned 4 times a year and each cleaning costs $60. Twice a year would be OK if you brush carefully and every day and if your teeth are in good condition.
Reply:When I visit my denist (which is not very often at all), he gives me an A+ report. On top of rare dentist visits, I only brush once a day. In spite of all the so-called neglect, my teeth are perfectly healthy(no cavities or anything). It might have some to do with the fact that I dont drink or smoke. If you dont drink or smoke I guess you should be fine. I know I sure am. Note: (Im 22yrs old)
Reply:i think it is ok to do a one year check on your teeth. it is not necessary to clean them at all if you are taking good care of them.
Reply:Getting your teeth cleaned twice a year is needed to remove plaque build up, and deep clean areas brushing and flossing dont. Also its the first step to detecting cavaties, and other oral health issues. If you go too long its going to be much more expensive and painfull to take care of later. Think root canals and extractions.Everyones oral chemisty is different. Some people can develop oral problems in a matter of a month or two, others can be fine for years. I would consider trying to find dental insurance, or supplemental coverage if you already have it. Some average $10 a month, and cheaper if connected to your health plan. And cleanings and basice services are usually covered. But if all your getting is cleanings $100 is kinda pricey, I would try dentist shopping. If not covered my cleanings would be $40 and I go to the best dentist hands down in my area.
Reply:How often you get your teeth cleaned depends on a lot of factors including the existing condition of them, how prone you are to cavities and decay, how well or how much you salivate, what kind of medications you might be taking, and any other medical conditions that may affect your teeth or mouth.

I would definitely not recommend that anyone have their teeth cleaned less than twice a year. Even if your teeth seem fine after a year of not having them cleaned you would be amazed at the difference if you had them cleaned after that amount of time. If your dentist is too expensive then shop around for someone cheaper instead of cutting back on visits. Having your teeth rot will be much more expensive and hard to deal with than having them cleaned twice a year. You can also set aside a little money each month so that when you do go to the dentist paying for it wont be so hard on you.
