Dental hygienists and deep cleaning? do we really need the deep cleaning, or are they just ripping me off?

i just had my first deep teeth cleaning in 25 years. I did not see any plaque or tarter etc. removed. they charge me $290 for 1/4 quadrant including an antibiotic. Was all that really necessary or are they just trying to make fast money?

deep cleaning is more important that the superficial cleaning. The bacteria in the subgingival area is more dangerous that the one on the superficial.
Reply:Same here It seems to be the new thing now for dentist to rip people off.
Reply:My dentist said I needed one too, but then I went to a different dentist and he said the other one was just trying to rip me off and that I really didn't need one.

I'd say find a new dentist!
Reply:I'll be honest here. As a dental hygienist, I HAVE actually seen a dentist that was doing needless deep cleanings. And charging an enormous amount. It was during my first year out of school 25 years ago, so I was too afraid to report him for it. I quit working for him after a month of seeing what he was doing to people.

So yes, there are a few shady dentists out there and if you're concerned about it....PLEASE get a second opinion before your next deep cleaning with him. 99% of the dentists i've seen and worked for have been honest and very ethical.
Reply:Routine "cleanings" are absolutely necessary for contributing to good oral health.
