My cat went in for a routine dental cleaning and had all his teeth extracted. Should I have him euthanized?

I'm worried about his quality of life and it breaks my heart. He's only 5 years old. I don't know what to do. I want to be selfish and keep him around, but I don't know if it's the best for him.

It's not at all necessary to have him put down. He's only 5 years old and probably in excellent health except for the whole teeth thing.

He should still be able to eat canned food just fine. And I recommend canned over dry kibble anyway.

What a joke. Eukanuba isn't TOO bad, but Iams is NOT quality food. Neither is Science Diet. If you look on the site I just gave, you can see a list of high quality canned foods (even the dry foods are good). Also, the Nutro Max Cat sold at PetSmart is a pretty decent food....a bit cheaper than the others....but it's true that you get what you pay for. Except in the cases of Iams and Science Diet. Over-priced crap....
Reply:I don't understand why a Vet would pull all of them......There are MANY good can cat foods out there that your cat can eat with minimal discomfort.
Reply:According to MY vet (My Kali had to have her fangs taken out-bad hygiene) and he said he's had cats loose all thier teeth and live long healthy lives. Its just a matter of making sure thier food can be lapped up so that they get the nutrition they need. But please check with YOUR vet so they can take the individual cats needs and age into account.
Reply:I'm a veterinary technician and have been for 10yrs. I would first ask your veterinarian for advise, but if the cat is only 5 I don't really understand why ALL of his teeth have been extracted. Soo I personally would not, he should be able to handle canned food just fine, just make sure it is a good quality food like Iams or Eukanuba.
Reply:No, just feed him soft foods. In time when his gums hardens you can give him dry foods. He'll be OK...%26amp; his quality of life is fine.
Reply:NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THAT IS MURRRRRRRRRRRRRRDER!!!!! KITTYS HAVE FEELINGS TOO!!! FEED IT THE SLIMY STUFF.
Reply:Why were all his teeth extracted? sometimes cats lose their FRONT teeth naturally, but still have all their molars, which is what they use for chewing and grinding food - if they have molars but no inscisors (fronts), no problem - my cat is missing half her front teeth and she does quite well. to help your cat, you could wet his dry food or feed him some wet food if he loses weight... but DEFINATELY feed a higher quality food - eagle pack, nutro, skip the grocery brands... keep an eye on his weight. 5 is barely middle age for a cat. watch his attitude and health - he could live another 10 years no problem!!!
Reply:Why don't you give it to a good home where you will know that he will be loved and treated well? I understand that you like him but if you are worried about his quality of life then give him to someone else or to an animal center where he will be loved and cared.
Reply:Just feed him cream of mouseroom soup.
Reply:If he's not suffering in pain, I don't see any reason to have him out down. He can still eat without teeth. Just feed him the soft canned foods.
Reply:Gosh no. Five years old for a cat is a youngin. Just give him canned food. My Jerimie was 20 years old and had no teeth for about 5 of them, and he was fine. Don't worry. Good Luck! :)
Reply:There's nothing wrong with your cat--it was probably a really bad gum infection. Give your cat very well-ground food (no hard stuff) and check with the vet about vitamin supplements. Also, keep your cat indoors from now on--as far as other cat's are concerned, yours is virtually defenseless. And please neuter your cat, otherwise the indoor routine may make it miserable. Good luck, he's got a good 10-15 years left. B.
Reply:Just feed him mushy canned food and he will do fine and live a full life. There is no need to put him down.
Reply:well, depends on if he still enjoys playing if he is able to eat soft food and drink, is he unhappy, in pain?

a cat can live a happy life despite not having teeth. give the cat a week or 2 to adjust.
Reply:For heavens sake, didn't you discuss this with the vet? Didn't he tell you why the teeth needed to be pulled?

I would surely like to know why if he didn't. If the teeth were badly infected or decayed your cat will be so much better without them. It absolutely is not necessary for the cat to have teeth. He can eat canned food and even dry without teeth. IMO canned food is the right diet, especially for male cats.

Cats don't really chew their dry food anyway and it just tends to accumulate in the stomach and take much too long to digest.

So certainly keep your cat. He can have a long and healthy life!
Reply:Feed him WET or MOIST foods for the time being. Hope AND pray that his teeth will grow back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Reply:nah just get him a fake grill like the rapper's where. Depending on what color he is like if he is a black cat, gold would do him best or if he was a silver cat, platinum would look pretty good
Reply:Please don't euthanize him. Cats do very well with no teeth. They can eat canned cat food, moist treats, %26amp; suprise you with eating hard food Try pedialyte in the water. The quality of life does not go down, it changes, %26amp; the cat doesn't eat all the time. The other moments of his life should be enjoyed like any other cat.
Reply:why euthanize him just because he doesnt have teeth he still needs love and care and you can feed him soft food please dont euthanize him for this reason how would y ou feel?
Reply:No, My mom's cat had that done about a year ago. He's over ten years old, and my mom says he is in better shape than ever. He eats canned moist food. He actually eats better now because before it hurt to eat with his bad teeth. The vet wouldn't have pulled his teeth if it weren't okay.
Reply:He should be kept and fed edible cat food. The one who extracted his teeth should be reported to the Humane Society and be prosecuted!!!
Reply:i don't think so, there are cat foods that are very soft. he should be fine, just keep him inside. don't forget to love him, he has had a real experience.
