My mouth reeks 10 days after wisdom teeth extraction and I have been cleaning it a lot! Is it normal?

Serious answers please...

I have been brushing, rinsing with listerine... but there's this foul odor coming from the extraction site. It's still sensitive, so i have just passed the brush there very carefully, and even then i sometimes draw a little blood. I'm very disgusted with my mouth! It smells like something died in there... 3 days ago i went to my dr. to have my stitches removed, and she said everything looked fine, so i don't think it's an infection.

Is it normal for the wound to smell? Does it go away soon?

Do you have a brand new dentist, who doesn't know what she's doing? It sounds very much like an infection to me.

You can try rinsing your mouth out with hot salt water every couple of hours. As hot as you can stand it, and pretty darn salty (about a teaspoon per 4 ounces of water). Hold the water in your mouth and swoosh it back and forth over that extraction site, using your tongue and cheek muscles.

Salt is a natural antiseptic, and will draw infections out of the gum tissues.
Reply:Ya, I tried salt water %26amp; it helped me too. Also, I met my dentist and he said the smell is due to the hole left by the extraction %26amp; food particles might get stuck so keep rinsing it especially after eating. He asked me to lightly brush the surgery site. Report It

Reply:Sounds like you have a serious infection, go immediately to the dentist.
Reply:blood is smelly maybe you need to brush with baking soda and toothpaste.

that might help
Reply:im pretty sure its ok... i just got my last tooth extracted and my breathe smelled a little bad... but it normal.. unless it smells like shittt??t hen u need to get some help lol.
Reply:What are the chances of you having something stuck in the extraction site since the sutures were removed?

Try rinsing with warm salt water again to see if you can dislodge whatever may be in there.. if that doesn't work after 24 hours, call the dentist's office and get an appointment to have the area flushed.

That may help.....

Good Luck!

Reply:i dont think its normal. stop using listerine. just use warm salt water to clean out the infected area. keep doing this after every meal. when brushing, make sure you brush your tounge real good. trying seeing your surgent about this. i visited mines today because i've had all 4 wisdom teeth removed about 8 days go and i dont have any smell at all and the wounds are doing fine.
Reply:It could be as simple as the healing process and the best thing to do is keep your mouth clean. Your dentist can recommend a safe mouthwash.

Swallowed blood can cause bad breath ,too.

If you have an infection, you will also have pain, possibly drainage, the area will be warmer than the rest of your face to the touch.

You may also run a fever and feel generally unwell. There will be swelling and inflammation at the site.

If you don't have any of these symptoms, just wait it out for a few more days. Do check out the safety of the mouthwash you are using. It might be irritating your extraction site.

All the best,

Karen
Reply:You could have what is called dry socket. Don't be so over zealous about cleaning the extraction sites, just gently irrigate them/rinse. You need to NOT disturb the clot that forms. Call the surgeons office and tell them about the odor. This is not uncommon but may require something or other special instructions.
Reply:Your Dentist must be fresh out of school. It sounds like it is infected. ODOR MEANS INFECTION.

Get a bottle of HYDROGEN PEROXIDE AT THE DRUG STORE.

This is a simple, cheap solution to various painful mouth problems. It is very inexpensive.

Your drug store has it on the bottom shelf next to alcohol, usually. It is about $1.00 a quart.

Swish with a mouth full morning noon and night. Let it bubble, do not rinse right away. It will bubble the infection out really well. The odor should be gone in one or two days.

Good Luck.I
Reply:Actually, I am looking for the answer to this too. I got 2 wisdom teeth removed 6 days ago and have real bad mouth odor and am embarassed to talk at work. The stitches I guess are soluble but I am seeing my doctor tomorrow anyways. I havent used Listerine at all fearing it might irritate the stiches. I will check with the doctor and let you know too.
