Should a tooth cleaning cost $500- and a filling cost 250-??

I have a friend who lives in Port Charolette, FL. They went to the dentist yesterday for the first time in many years. He has insurance but im not sure what kind. They took xrays and did an exam and it cost 20- for the co-pay.

They say he needs a cleaning and that would cost him 500- and he recently lost a filling and they want to charge him 250- for that.

Isnt that a bit steep? I've never heard such outrageous prices especially with insurance!

It's not like hes going to a dentist that treats celebrities or anything...its located in a strip mall next to a subway.

I think he's being robbed and told him to call his insurance company.

routine cleaning....$75.00 to $150.00
Reply:Yes dental work is now a get rich quick industry. I had 3 visits to the dentist it came to $2,800.00.
Reply:If your friend has not been to the dentist in many years he/she may need a deeper cleaning called root planing and scaling. The reason that the dentist's office would complete this type of treatment is if your friend has periodontal disease with deeper pocketing areas that require a more thorough cleaning and anesthetic. This can be very expensive... about $150 per quadrant = $600 for the entire mouth. Insurance does pay for a portion of this usually. And for the filling, if it is very large it can cost close to $200, but I would not say that it should be over $200. He/she may be able to call other dentists and find out how much they charge for similar procedures... but remember you usually pay for what you get. His/her dental insurance may also be able to recommend some dentists that contract with them and that may reduce the amount he/she needs to pay out of pocket.
Reply:his ins. should pay most of it and he should be able to pay the co-pay... not to pay out that kind of money..so he really needs to chack out his ins.
