My cat needs to have his teeth cleaned but im afraid....?

My cat has to have his teeth cleaned. He is 3 almost 4 years old and his breath has started to smell bad and his gums look alittle red so i know its time to have his teeth cleaned. The only thing is im sooo afraid that he%26#039;s going to die whenever they have put him to sleep( or whatever it is called, maybe anestesia?) to clean his teeth. I need people%26#039;s advice who have had to get their cats teeth cleaned, Should i be so worried? what all goes on when they clean their teeth? is their a high risk he migt no wake up? i dont know what i would do if he never woke up...thanks for your answers

Anesthesia is always a risk, but it is a very remote one. The best precaution you can take is to have a thorough exam and bloodwork done before the anesthesia, so any potential problems can be identified and dealt with. Most vets have anesthesia monitoring equipment as well to keep an eye on vital signs such as heart rate. The health risk of those mouth bacteria affecting other organs (heart, kidneys and liver commonly) is greater than the anesthesia risk. I anesthetize on average 3 animals a day, but when it comes to my own babies I have to let someone else do it. Nervous pet parents are common : ) You can ask the vet%26#039;s office to call as soon as it%26#039;s done, we do that all the time.

As far as what is done: we do a full scaling and polishing, exactly like what you%26#039;d get at the dentist%26#039;s office, which is why anesthesia is needed. Animals don%26#039;t sit still for that. We can do dental x-rays of any suspicious teeth and remove any that are causing a problem. Most vets don%26#039;t do fillings or root canals because of the expense, but a specialty practice would do that. Our dentals go home the same day, whether or not they stay overnight depends on the vet and what drugs are used.
Reply:My cats have had their teeth cleaned a few times, and they woke up from the anesthesia fine. He will be a little loopy afterwards, he%26#039;ll be very calm, and he might have some difficulty walking, but he%26#039;ll be back to normal as soon as it all wears off!
Reply:I work at a vets office, and your afraid you need to talk to your vet, and make him make you feel comfy about the process, ask for a tour talk to the people who will be doing the dental for your cat, ask qestions like what kind of stuff they use to montor the cats heart rate, sidations, are the staff knowning what they are doing, if you dont trust them, get out, simple!

ask them to do blood work to see if everything is alright. yes it may cost you more for the blood work, but its worth it :)

hope everything goes alright

Cheers!

Matt
Reply:awwe, well I got to take in Nibblet too.. but, really, the kitty will be fine. they run blood tests beforehand, to make sure your kitty is up for the procedure, and then when they do the work, kitty will be sleeping soundly... then they keep the kitty overnight, so it will be all rested and ready to go home... it is well worth it honey. If you don%26#039;t have it done, the kitty could get ill and die. I had a kitty that I took every year for his teeth cleaning, and he lived to the ripe old age of 24!!! get the baby%26#039;s teeth cleaned, they will thank you....
Reply:It is always a risk when a cat is %26quot;put out%26quot; under G.A., but for a young cat it%26#039;s pretty safe, providing they%26#039;re healthy and necessary blood wk.%26#039;s been done.

I%26#039;ve had cats who didn%26#039;t need to be under general anesthesia, a couple of the good old-time vets I%26#039;d used would just scale the tartar off teeth with the help of an assistant,.. no need to put any stress on cat.

Others,.. and I%26#039;m finding lots of nowaday vets find it a %26quot;cash cow%26quot; and want to %26quot;clean teeth%26quot; with every checkup visit.

Which I really must see the cat in distress or the badly affected teeth/tooth before I will allow the procedure under general.

Usually in elderly cats, the good vets will weigh out the risks and benefits beforehand.

Anyways, if your young kitty is troubled by his oral health (not eating well, showing discomfort, etc.) and vet recommends, then best to get done, he will be fine.

Gd. luck.
Reply:My cat is about the same age as yours. I took her to the vet in October, and he showed me her teeth and gums. He told me that she could use a cleaning, and he also suggested that I start brushing her teeth with CET toothpaste. Instead of doing either of those things, I bought PetzLife gel and tried that on her. It has worked really well. I didn%26#039;t love the idea of anesthetizing my cat, buy I was honestly just as concerned with saving money. Her teeth and gums look better now, and I think I can avoid scaling for now.
Reply:The anesthesia used in veterinary hospitals for any surgery and/or dentals has gotten much safer than it was in the past. Many hospitals take precautions to ensure there are no problems with the pet. However, there is always a risk ANYTIME anesthesia is used. I wouldn%26#039;t worry though. Unless your cat has some problem, it is very safe to have the dental done. In fact, the chances of your cat having problems from the teeth going bad is a greater risk than the anesthesia used for the dental.

If you have concerns about your regular vet, have him give you a referral to a vet who specializes in dentistry.

I am actually trying to get my 10 y.o. cat in for a dental, but she is having issues with her bloodwork. Until I can get it straightened out, I have to wait on the dental. Vets will usually do dentals on young animals with only limited bloodwork on the day of the dentistry. Pets older than 7 years should have complete bloodwork done within 30 days of the dental, to make sure the pet is in good health to come out of anesthesia ok.
Reply:Don%26#039;t worry, when they clean your cat%26#039;s teeth, they only sedate them. They don%26#039;t put them to sleep. My cat was sedated, and she came out all big eyed and weird acting, but she was fine after half an hour.
Reply:my mom is a vet tech and so i spent a lot of time in vet offices behind the scenes. i also worked at a vet clinic for awhile. dentals aren%26#039;t much to be afraid of. think of going to the dentist for a tooth cleaning yourself. i%26#039;m not going to lie, they do use a dremel, but the same thing is accomplished. also any extractions will be performed during this time. anesthesia does hold a risk of death, but a small one. we had only one cat die in over 3 years from it. we put about 3 animals a day put under so that adds up to a lot. there will be pre-work done like blood samples, and a history. the vet will talk to you about any concerns. the kitty will go to slumberland and not feel anything! (in my opinion very lucky as i do not like going to the dentist and we have no way of communicating what we are doing to an animal so they are not scared). dentals will actually improve his quality of health and therefore should be done. do realize that this is not a $50 procedure though....ask your vet also, my clinic allowed animals who had minor surgical work done in the morning to be picked up at night. they will be groggy until the next day. but nothing to be scared of.
Reply:There is always a slight risk when a cat has an anaesthetic, but a dental cleaning is a fairly minor operation and they aren%26#039;t under for long. My cat had his teeth cleaned (and a couple of extractions) under anaesthetic 2 years ago aged 8. He was fine and when I got him home he acted like nothing had happened. Discuss your fears with your vet and I%26#039;m sure s/he%26#039;ll be able to set your mind at rest. You can have some blood tests done beforehand to make sure his organs can cope with the anaesthetic.

EMERGENCY!! dog needs teeth cleaned!!!??

MY DOG IS gonna loose her teeth if i dont clean them !!! does any one know any cheap ways i can clean my dogs teeth !!!? we cant pay the vet for him to clean her teeth we dont have much money !!! my baby aww im gonna cry !!! please i dont really care what lectures you have just give me some good ideas that you used to clean dogs teeth !!! please oh please !! :) she doeasnt seem to be in pain or anything but i noticed today there was alot of tarter her breath smelled soo bad !! please help me :) im only 12 and this is my first dogmy parents are threatening to give her away after being with her 6 years !!! well they will give her away if i cant find a cheap way or a tree grows with hundred dollar bills !! :( :(

EMERGENCY!! dog needs teeth cleaned!!!??
Only the vet can clean your dogs teeth the way they need to be cleaned. After this, you can brush your dog%26#039;s teeth daily as a preventative, using a toothbrush and toothpaste made especially for dogs.

It%26#039;s very important for dogs to have %26quot;dentals%26quot; done to remove the plaque. If not done, periodontitis disease sets in and can affect your dog%26#039;s heart, brain, optic nerve, etc., etc.
Reply:a cheap way: get a toothbrush and a DOG toothpaste and clean her teeth... my dogs love their doggy toothpaste... but it won%26#039;t get rid of the problem, it will just prevent it from getting worse.

and chew toys, dental treats (not that cheap)

your parents should not give away a dog just because it has some health problems... unless they really can%26#039;t pay for it... do some babysitting and pay for it. there is always that solution.

it does not cost that much and the vet will do it one time... save your dog%26#039;s teeth.
Reply:Start brushing your dog%26#039;s teeth and start giving your dog raw meaty bones. Raw meaty bones keep a dog%26#039;s teeth heathy and clean.

ONLY RAW BONES, NEVER COOKED BONES.
Reply:All I can say is DO NOT use human toothpaste on her teeth, it can kill her. You can get some doggy toothpaste and a toothbrush at Petsmart for about $10. If you brush her teeth everyday it will at least keep them from getting any worse. I brush my puppy%26#039;s teeth everyday and she has extremely pearly white teeth. It%26#039;ll also help the breath. Also Greenies, or you can get Freshies from Walmart, are a good treat that does a pretty good job of cleaning her teeth. They are about $5 for a 12 pack and you can give her one a day. You still need to brush her teeth, but that helps a lot.

Also you might want to call the vet and ask what they charge. Your parents might actually be surprised. Vets are not typically as expensive as human doctors, so it might not be too much for them to do, and it only has to be done every year or two, not every six months like humans. I am not sure what a cleaning is, since I haven%26#039;t had my puppy long enough to have to get it done, but all I know is when I had to put her in the doggy hospital for four days it wasn%26#039;t nearly as expensive as I thought it would be. So all you have to do is ask the vet, you never can tell, it could only cost about $20 for all you know. They are probably expecting something like $50-100, which is probalby not going to be the case.

Good luck. I hope this helps.
Reply:The buildup of tarter forms a thick shell over the tooth and no toothbrush is going to remove that. NEVER scrape your dog%26#039;s teeth yourself either. You can start brushing, but it won%26#039;t really do any good until you get that hardened crapp off first. It depends on how bad it is now. Go to petsmart and find dog toothpaste, then, go to the grocery store and get a soft child-size toothbrush. Start by using your finger and putting some paste on her gums. Do this for a couple days before trying to introduce the brush. Never hold your dog down and try to force-brush her. Start slow to get her used to it. Your parents sound like azzholes. My parents were the same way with the dog I had as a kid. They never paid for squat for her so now that I%26#039;m older I force my mom to do what%26#039;s right for her current dog. One day you%26#039;ll be able to lecture them too. Good luck.

BTW: we just had a dental on our dog. The procedure plus 2 teeth pulled cost me $300 and they said the size/breed of the dog was irrelevant in pricing.
Reply:Raw raw raw bones. Carrots also. Anything that goes crunch will crack the tartar off of their teeth. Find a local butcher and get some raw soup bones - sometimes they even package them up as %26quot;for your dog%26quot; bones. And go whack your parents over the head with some newspaper for me will ya? If your teeth were rotting out of your head would they give you away??
Reply:Prevention of this tarter buildup is the cheapest way. The only way to remove all that tarter is to have a dental done at the vet. After that you need to brush her teeth (with dog toothpaste only) about 4 times a week to help prevent tarter from building up.
Reply:go to the pet store and get some pet tooth paste and a finger toothbrush that what my vet said to get my dog lost alot of her teeth so dont feel bad not everybody has the money goodluck I know how you feel. some dog bones cleans teeth to
Reply:umm i think you should take her to the vet
Reply:I do have a suggestion. If the teeth are infected, just have them removed. I see people clean their dog%26#039;s teeth and give antibiotics and have dental work over and over while the dog constantly has a low-grade infection. It is better just to have them removed. Dogs do fine without teeth. They are not vain, so gumminess doesn%26#039;t bother them. They still eat well. It is healthier for the heart in the long run just to have them removed rather than having them worked on over and over and over.
Reply:just get a toothbrush and some dog toothpaste(or a little amount of human toothpaste) and brush its teeth with that

Any way to clean your teeth when you don't have access to a sink/brush?

I generally try to brush my teeth after every meal. However, five days out of the week, I%26#039;m not at home most of the day and either at work or school. It isn%26#039;t really practical for me to find a sink to use some mouthwash or brush my teeth, so I was wondering if there were any other solutions I could use to clean my teeth after lunch.

I realize there are mints/gum but those really just make your breath smell nice, and don%26#039;t actually clean them.

I%26#039;m really particular about keeping my teeth clean, so it bugs me when I have to wait until I get home in the evening to clean my teeth after lunch.

Any way to clean your teeth when you don%26#039;t have access to a sink/brush?
There is just the thing for you, a sewak/miswak. It is like a tooth brush but its dry so you don%26#039;t need any water or anything. You can buy it at eBay if you don%26#039;t find it at the local stores, but it%26#039;s really good and use full !

What you are more than likely experiencing is called %26quot;dry socket%26quot;. This happens to a tooth socket when you are creating a vacuum inside of your mouth. Mostly from drinking with a straw or smoking a cigarette! The deep cleaning and scaling should only have been painful for about a day or two if that at most. Avoid aspirin and the like for another day or two and stick with Tylenol for the pain.

Did your jaw JUST start hurting? There will be some soreness but the soreness from the scaling should go away within a day or so. The extraction areas (where you had the teeth removed) will take longer to heal and can be sore for awhile longer, but it should slowly get better. If the pain is getting worse, then I would contact your dentist. There are possible complications from extractions, especially if there was infection or the teeth were impacted, so it is important to let your dentist know if things take a turn for the worse.

Is getting your teeth cleaned suppose to hurt like hell and make you bleed like crazy?

So its been a long time, about 4 years since getting my teeth cleaned and now that I have insurance I decided to finally get it done. The dental hygienist was checking my teeth and told me I needed to floss more often. Then she took a little hook looking thingy with a really sharp end and started scraping the ends of my gum. It hurt like crazy!!! Not to mention all the blood I was tasting and seeing on her glove. And thats ALL she did!! From what I remember in the past, they used flouride trays to clean my teeth and polish. Isn%26#039;t that what they%26#039;re suppose to do?? Please correct me if I%26#039;m wrong but I don%26#039;t ever want to get my teeth cleaned!! That was couple days ago and it still bleeds and hurts when I brush my teeth. I never thought getting your teeth cleaned would be a painful experience. Is this normal???

Is getting your teeth cleaned suppose to hurt like hell and make you bleed like crazy?
I am a hygienist and I would first like to state that we do not enjoy making people bleed or causing any discomfort.

With that said, I would like to clarify for you some of the other responses you are getting.

Yes, 4 years is too long to wait to have your teeth cleaned. Routinely it should be done every 6 months. What happens is that the soft plaque on your teeth continuously builds up, this is why you need to brush and floss. When it mixes with the calcium in your saliva, then it turns hard and adheres to the side of your tooth (like barnacle on a boat). This is called calculus or commonly known as tarter, it is hard piece of bacteria.

Tarter irritates the gums (like a pebble in your shoe) and it sends your brain a message to send your blood cells to that area to help kill the bacteria, but it gets trapped, causing inflammation which is red swollen gums. When you have your teeth cleaned, removing the irritation (tarter) actually %26quot;uncorks%26quot; the build up of blood and it flushes out of the sulcus (area between tooth and gum). THink of it as getting a splinter in your finger and leaving it in for 4 years, it gets swollen and inflamed and infected, then you try to remove the splinter, yes it is going to bleed and hurt like hell, but after your body heals, it will get better!!! If you get another splinter and remove it right away, it is quick, easy, minimal pain and your fine...right? THink of your teeth and gums this way. Keeping up with your cleanings will make your gums healthier and prevents you to have a more difficult cleaning like you just had.

It is actually a healthy thing to have that blood flushed out, but you don%26#039;t want to have it build up to begin with and that is where brushing and flossing come into place.

Now, if you maintain good home care and go every 6 months for a cleaning, you will most likely have a fairly easy experience. If you prolong it, you end up causing gum disease in the form of periodontitis, which the bone is being damaged by the bacteria. What you have right now is gingivitis, which is inflammation of the gums, with a good cleaning and good home care, that will be reversed, but if let go, then it will develop into periodontits and that is not reversable. Keep in mind that gum disease is directly linked to heart disease, evidence to pancreatic cancer and even alzheimer%26#039;s.. My motto is when did your mouth become separate from your body.

To also comment, I would stick with a hygienist to have your cleanings with. Nothing personal to the dentists, but we have much more training that they do when it comes to hygiene and tend to be more thorough. This is our specialty. If scaling under the gum line is needed, it is because we have to remove the tarter, not because we like to hurt.

I recommend to use an electric toothbrush, they force you to brush for 2 mins. and they are 90% more effective than a regualr brush. Brush 2-3x a day and floss every day. If you feel you are still have inflammation and bleeding issues, your hygienist can recommend an antimicrobial mouth rinse to help.
Reply:It is very common if you have sensitive gums or don%26#039;t brush often, esp if you have a lot of build up
Reply:If you didn%26#039;t have your teeth cleaned in that many years and you were not diligent about flossing, yes this is normal.

The scraper was getting off hardened plaque that probably already caused gum disease (gingivitis) and hence the bleeding. Keep up your dental hygiene routine and things will get better.

If the hardened plaque builds up enough, you will require gum surgery and may lose your teeth altogether. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
Reply:actually it is some how normal.

but what is not normal is ur continuous bleeding so go to Dr. to give you antibiotics and antinflamatory drugs if necessary.

Best wishes
Reply:If you don%26#039;t have particularly good dental hygene, that may be the problem. Flossing and brushing regularly can make your gums stronger and less likely to bleed. That may be why she said you weren%26#039;t flossing enough. However, I brush and floss to the point that my family members think I%26#039;m crazy, and I still bled at the dentist. He was very rude about it as well. Said i didn%26#039;t floss. I told him I did and he didn%26#039;t believe me. Some dentists aren%26#039;t very gentle when cleaning teeth. The sharp hooky thing is for scraping plaque off your teeth and most dentists do it. Next time, let the dentist know beforehand that you have sensitive gums. And go to a different dentist next time. Except for the one horrid dentist, all my dentist visits have been fine and never hurt.
Reply:Yes if you don%26#039;t do regular teeth and gum care it is painful and bleeding. If you are not flossing regularly and correctly you had a lot of plaque build up on your gums. It has to be removed with the scraper.for your future comfort floss like crazy! Make sure to hit all sides of your teeth and in the back too.
Reply:WOW, too long to wait 4 yrs, should be done every 6 mos. Dentist has told me should not hurt, yeah right, everyone I know hates dental cleaning as hygenists dig down deep, like going to China !, told my dentist could not take that as hurt for over week later, hardly able to eat, etc, so now he does it, I tell him take it easy, but yes, does bleed lot, gross, even tho dont bleed wqhen I brush, floss, think they enjoy doing it to us! Talk to dentist if he can do it as get too much hurt from why hyg, one does it. Mine uses dinx? on some electric machine, hatwe the cold water it uses, sensitive to it too, ouch !! then polishes with minty polish. Good luck and i can feel for you.
Reply:my best friend is in dental hygeine school and she cleaned my teeth and the same thing happened. That hook is used to scrape calculus (sp) off of your teeth which is a plaque build up... i think. because of all the scraping, touching and moving around in there your blood vessels swell up and then it doesnt take hardly anything at all to make them bleed. I know this sounds crazy but you actually want them to use that hook the best they can otherwise your teeth are going to decay faster. Think of it this way: if the hygienist is nice on your teeth she may not be getting them as clean as she can and a root canal is going to hurt alot worse than a cleaning.
Reply:You probably had to have a deeper/more thorough cleaning than normal b/c it has been so long since your last cleaning. Normally if it is painful they would numb you to keep you from feeling it.
Reply:You can probably lessen the bleeding now and in the future by taking 500 mg of Vitamin C a day (for at least the week preceding the cleaning).

I am good about getting my teeth cleaned once or twice a year (usually twice). Still, I could not tolerate the sonic cleaning one dental hygienist tried to give me. It was much worse than the scraping. In the meantime, get some Sensodyne toothpaste and use mouthwash twice a day - not just any mouthwash, but Listerine (30 seconds) once and Biotene anti-plaque (30 seconds). Floss every day if you can, but you can also use a Waterpik (they make a cordless model), which you might tolerate better. Use a soft toothbrush.

Some dentists and hygienists are just making it painful. I haven%26#039;t had a Fluoride tray since I was in my childhood.

Which power toothbrush do you feel is best for your teeth, as far as cleaning ability?

I love my Sonicare toothbrush. I%26#039;ve been using one for 10+ years.

Which power toothbrush do you feel is best for your teeth, as far as cleaning ability?
I have oral-b sonic vitality (20$), works great.
Reply:Definitely sonicare. I have both the oral-b triumph and the last version of the sonicare. The new sonicare has a much smaller head wich facilitate access in hard-to-reach areas. It massages gums better than the oral-b%26#039;s oscilating head.
Reply:My wife and I use the Sonicare brands. They work well and reduce the amount of plaque build up. I still have to floss but some people say they dont need to with the sonicare. Sams club has the best deal I could find. I think two of them were about 120 bucks. Just need new heads when theywear out.
Reply:dont waste your money.you still must hold and maneuver toothbrush in the correct positions whether it be manual or electric.sometimes the electric ones can be to rough on you gums amd most don%26#039;t clean well with them because they think the electric ones means they dont have to do any of the work themselves. so as far as cleaning ability-- the great manual toothbrush gets my vote:)
Reply:The ultreo! It%26#039;s new from one of the inventors of sonicare, but instead of using sonic action, it uses ultrasonic action to better break up plaque and massage your gums. It%26#039;s comparable in price to sonicare, ultreo.com.

Also,if you need fillings or have any damage to your teeth, will the dentist insist on repair work before cleaning etc.

How much will it cost to have my teeth cleaned and stains removed with a private dentist.?
At my office cleanings are 52$- 34$ for x-rays and 26$ for an exam --a bargain at $112, total-- but I recommend a panoramic x-ray, too at 58$.
Reply:Filling is about £15-20. to clean your teeth of stains about £350+
Reply:HELLO,

FOR MOST STANDARD CLEANING EXPECT TO PAY FROM $95 - 140. A DENTIST WOULD WANT TO WORK TO REPAIR CLEANED TEETH RATHER THAN DIRTY ONES.
Reply:Go to your dentist receptionist and enquire. They do not do repair work until they are cleaned. You can always ask for an estimate before any work is carried out.
Reply:The charge will all depend on if you have dental coverage or not. If you have coverage than teeth cleaning is covered at 100%, but if you don%26#039;t have dental coverage than it can run anywhere from $100-$150. Fillings can cost anywhere from $100-$200 depending on how many you need.

Ameriplan has a dental coverage as low as $19.95 a month and you can save up to 86% off their fee. Plus you get vision, pharmacy and Chiropractor for free.

Whats the best toothpaste to clean and whiten naturally quite yellow teeth?

Please can someone tell me what the best teeth cleaning paste or wash is, or if they have any tips (apart from brush thurally at least twice a day lol)

Whats the best toothpaste to clean and whiten naturally quite yellow teeth?
Actually there is a great whitening gel. It is at Wal-Mart for aroung $5 and it works really well. No need for a fancy kit. One thing I learned when I used the whitening gel is if you take some plastic wrap and make it into a kind of mouth guard it works way better and leave it on for 15 minutes instead of 10, there are no side effects and you%26#039;ll see a difference sooner.

Reply:Crest has a great line of whitening Expression toothpastes and they have awesome flavors, mint, lemon ice, cinnamon, vanilla, and orange. I love them ,lemon iceit my favorite its really refreshing.
Reply:I saw a segment, I think on Good Morning America, that tested whitening toothpastes. Surprisingly, Ultrabright was one of the best and one of the cheapest. You could try a whitening product for faster results.
Reply:I have found that rinsing with Hydrogen Peroxide before brushing twice a day does a very good job of whitening teeth and keeping bad bacteria out of your mouth so it also helps in keeping you healthy.

Any Colgate toothpaste is good.
Reply:I%26#039;m a dentist and I always recommend the Rembrandt cleaning system as the preferred method of safely whitening one%26#039;s teeth. It achieves results faster than most anything over the counter and even most prescription methods.

Should my cat be taking an antibiotic like clavamox after having his teeth cleaned?

I had one of my cats teeth cleaned about a year ago. He was given clavamox after the cleaning. I had another of my cat%26#039;s teeth cleaned yesterday but was not given clavamox or any other antibiotic.

Should my cat be taking an antibiotic like clavamox after having his teeth cleaned?
I work as a vet tech. Typically if we see any sign of gingivitis..inflammation of the gums, we dose with penicillin during the dental. Antibiotics are given afterward if the vet feels that the animal had a sufficient amount of inflammation and possible entry routes for bacteria to breed. There does not have to be tooth decay and infection for the vet to perscribe antibiotics. I would not be concerned unless you know that your cat had moderate tartar and gingivitis before the dental. check your receipt to see if any other medications like penicillin was given.
Reply:no i work for a vet and clavomox is for infections and your pet dose not need that unless he had an infected tooth, other wise nothing
Reply:normally a vet will give a mild antibotic BEFORE a cleaning just incase of nicks and cuts in the gum and to ward off any kind of blood infection during the cleaning. Its not always needed after a cleaning. They might have sent some home because the vet did a poor job and nicked and cut the gums alot. I wouldnt worry much they generally know what they are doing.
Reply:It all depends on how bad the teeth are. When they have to do major scaling of the teeth it releases a LOT of bacteria into their system, and the antibiotics are given to fight that. They are often given both pre-op and post-op, but aren%26#039;t given for every dental. Antibiotics aren%26#039;t and shouldn%26#039;t be given for every routine cleaning, but *should* be given if there are extractions, bad gingivitis, or really heavy build up of plaque.

My son is 11months old and he has four teeth I brush them twice a day with an infant and tooth cleaner but....

I noticed that he has yellow spots on his teeth almost as if I wasn%26#039;t cleaning them properly but I really do I clean them with a wash cloth and then with a toddler elmo tooth brush. I make sure to clean his gums and tounge. Is it normal for his teeth to have yellow stains. What can be causing this?

My son is 11months old and he has four teeth I brush them twice a day with an infant and tooth cleaner but....
Good for you. You sound like a dedicated Mum.

It is very, very unlikely to be anything of concern. And that includes some of the helpful suggestions above like tetracyclines, side-effects of antibiotics, fluorosis. The worst suggestion is the idea of fluoride poisoning - absolute nonsense.

Take him along to the dentist when you have your next checkup, and have a fun day of it. A ride in the chair, a stamp on his hand, a sticker ... that sort of thing. It%26#039;s a good intro for him at this age, and your fears may be alleviated.
Reply:you may want to check with a dentist. Do you let him go to bed with a bottle each night (with milk or formula?) It could be signs of bottle rot.

Reply:Has he been on antibiotics recently? If he has, there it is. Antibiotics attack the bad bacteria of an infection, but they also deplete certain good bacteria causing a lack of equilibruim that manifests as diarrhea, yellow stains on teeth, vaginal yeast infections etc.

I%26#039;ll check your details for your answer.
Reply:this has nothing to do with the brushing of the teeth. see a doctor, has the child been sick or had to take antibiotics?

You should ask your pediatrician.
Reply:may be missing some type of vitamin. Calcium perhaps
Reply:This is a very normal dental occurrences, this means he is receiving good calcium in his diet, which these are called calcium deposits, or wherever you live the water may have to much fluoride which is nothing to be alarmed over some babies react different to foods %26amp; much more don%26#039;t worry about this he will be losing those teeth anyway.
Reply:Looks like tetracycline staining.did u take them in ur last trimester?or r u takin any antibiotics now?lactating mothers should be careful about their diet and any medications.did ur kid go on any medications lately?some antibiotics cause these signs.dont be too harsh on the teeth.as i can not judge the condition completely i would advice u to see ur dentist soon..Dr.Vaibhav.

I went to a hygienist and gotten my teeth cleaned but i need another appointment and the hygienist said that..

i went to a hygienist and she cleaned my teeth, but she said that was the primary cleaning and that i needed a secondary cleaning and i have another appointment with her and she said she%26#039;s going to stick a needle in my gums. what%26#039;s going to happen? i%26#039;m nervous.

I went to a hygienist and gotten my teeth cleaned but i need another appointment and the hygienist said that..
I don%26#039;t know of any dental professional who would say, %26quot;I%26#039;m going to stick a needle in your gums%26quot;, for that matter even utter the word %26quot;needle%26quot;.

If you have gum disease, a dental instrument can go in under the gumline to get out plaque, and help heal your tissue so the bacteria can be killed. If you don%26#039;t do this, the gums receed more and more until your teeth can actually become loose.

It is a way for you to keep your teeth, so it%26#039;s worth the time and money. No amount of brushing will take care of infections below the gumline. You%26#039;ll want to be numb for this as it can be uncomfortable if you aren%26#039;t.

Most hygienists are paid by the hour and are not trying to %26quot;milk%26quot; people for money. They make good wages whether your teeth are healthy or not. In fact, scaling and root planing are difficult procedures for the hygienist and there%26#039;s no reason for them to want to do this if it isn%26#039;t necessary.

A hygienist will make a recommendation, but in the US, it is the doctor who diagnoses gum disease and prescribes the treatment. (They will usually listen to their hygienist, though, because they trust them.)

Sounds like a lot of people think dentists only show up to work everyday to cheat people out of money and torture them. Funny, most of the ones I know are nice people.
Reply:I doubt she said, %26quot;I%26#039;m going to stick a needle in your gums%26quot; And IDK what%26#039;s going to happen, because you didn%26#039;t specify what is WRONG with your mouth. But I%26#039;m guessing it%26#039;s to numb your mouth in some way.
Reply:I don%26#039;t understand this. I go for a cleaning and never had to go for a %26quot;secondary cleaning%26quot; and don%26#039;t know what the needle is all about. Call and ask and ask all questions till it is clear with you.

not %26quot;I%26#039;m going to stick a needle in your gums%26quot;.
Reply:I can%26#039;t remember what it is called right off the top of my head, but it will be ok...It is a deep cleaning and sometimes, especially if you haven%26#039;t been to the dentist in a long time there can be a lot of calculus build up and it is necessary to remove it all. But like I said before, don%26#039;t worry, you will be fine.

Take care of your teeth, they are the only ones you have!
Reply:the needle is to numb you it hurts a little it feels like poking you gums hard. but you usually dont need to get numbed for cleaning.
Reply:when they stick a needle in your gums, its usually because you have a cavity. she wants to stick the needle in your gums to numb your gums and the nerves so when she drills for the cavity you wont feel a thing. the needle part does not hurt, just a little pinch. the drilling does not hurt either because your numb and can%26#039;t feel it.
Reply:It%26#039;s hard to say since you weren%26#039;t specific about what%26#039;s wrong with your teeth, but it could be you have a cavity or you might have a bad buildup of tartar... It could be a number of things, but that%26#039;s all I can think of. The needle is to numb the area. Try not to be too nervous though. You%26#039;ll be in and out of there in no time. =)

Yes, just be sure your dentist knows your pregnant so he can take the proper precautions to keep your baby safe.

Is it okay to get my teeth cleaned RIGHT after I get my braces off?

Or are they really likely to shift if i leave my retainer off for that long while they%26#039;re cleaning my teeth? or would she clean them with my retainer on? any other info on getting braces off too .. (:

Is it okay to get my teeth cleaned RIGHT after I get my braces off?
dw, they polish your teeth and while they do this, ur teeth won%26#039;t shift in a few minutes so relax. they no what there doing
Reply:yes, it sure is.
Reply:The Orhtodontist or his Assistant that removes your braces will remove all of the cement that he or she sees. I do not think they will give you a good professional prophylaxis.

I would return to your regular Dentist for a good cleaning. Removing the retainer for a few minutes wiil not harm a thing.
Reply:Yes, you should have a dental cleaning after your braces are removed.

This will remove any staining or bonding that is left on your teeth.

No, you don %26#039;t need to wear your retainer while they clean your teeth.

It%26#039;s OK to leave your retainer off for a little while. You won%26#039;t eat with your retainer in either.

Just remember to put your retainer in a safe place while eating or getting your teeth cleaned.

Your orthodontist will give you info. once they are removed.

As long as you wear your retainer most of the time you%26#039;ll be OK. :)
Reply:um... i don%26#039;t see why not. ask your ortho
Reply:It%26#039;s the best time...it will also help to get the remainder of your cement off...and no, you don%26#039;t have to keep your retainer in for the cleaning...your teeth won%26#039;t shift that fast
Reply:first of all, a cleaning should take no more than 45 minutes tops. ur teeth are not going to shift in this amount of time. it is important that you get ur teeth cleaned after ur braces are off to get the glue, etc. off, but you should wait a week or two since your teeth might be sensitive. your teeth won%26#039;t shift if you take out the retainer periodically - just not for days at a time.

How much damage can a dental hygienist do to your mouth? I had my teeth cleaned 2 days ago and am in pain.?

I have sensitive teeth but having my teeth cleaned more frequently (once every 4 months) than normal used to help. Problems started last fall when a different dental hygienist cleaned my teeth. She was really rough and I was in pain and my gums were puffy for weeks. They weren%26#039;t before the cleaning. The next time, a new dh cleaned them. She said that some of my bone was exposed and blamed me for not brushing well. I think the previous dh caused the problem. I was in so much pain that I switched from Sensodyne toothpaste, which I had used for decades, to Arm %26amp; Hammer for sensitive teeth and using mouthwash hurt too much. I wanted to postpone the last cleaning but the dentist wouldn%26#039;t listen to me. This time I am in even more pain and have not been able to sleep much since the cleaning.

I think it%26#039;s time to find a new dentist. Are any dentist aware of the quality of work that their dental hygienists do?

How much damage can a dental hygienist do to your mouth? I had my teeth cleaned 2 days ago and am in pain.?
It is true that after a deep cleaning your gums may be sore. Have you considered discussing this with your dentist? He knows about your individual needs and should be able to help you.

Honestly, without seeing your teeth, it is difficult to know if you had a couple of %26quot;heavy handed%26quot; dental hygienists or if you have extremely sensitive gums and major oral hygiene issues.

It may be necessary to visit a periodontist (specializing in gum disease and bone loss), have your teeth cleaned %26quot;while you sleep%26quot; (a.k.a. be sedated), or get a prescription to help with the pain.

Dentists usually know the quality of the hygienists work - especially if they listen to their patients. Let him know!

Best of luck with this. Wish I could help you more :)
Reply:I wonder how deep a cleaning this dental hygenist gave you. If you had a deep root scaling, that can leave you sore for several days. A regular cleaning might make you a bit sore and swollen if you had a lot to clean off your teeth and above your gumline. Just do your best to floss everyday, brush twice a day and keep your teeth as clean as possible until the next cleaning. Tell your hygenist how much it hurts, they have things to help with that. If it happens again, ask for a new hygenist.

If they are %26quot;blaming you%26quot; and insisting on cleanings when you don%26#039;t feel like it, I would change my dentist office altogether. This is YOUR mouth and YOUR health. I hate when they get pushy like that. I%26#039;ve been in the same situation and I switched offices.
Reply:If you get some CoQ10 capsules and break them open then squirt the oil on your gums it will take down the swelling in a day or two. And you might consider going to your doctor for an antibiotic script. You may have gotten some bacteria into your bloodstream from a deep cleaning. I would switch dentists right away.
Reply:1st.... you don%26#039;t need a new dentist. He or she cannot change what you have been diagnosed with and you know what you have. Perio Disease.

2nd ...If you are getting cleanings every 4 months YOU KNOW you have periodontal disease. I guess the questions you have to ask your self are the following.......

a) how much do you smoke? That in its self KILLS your gum tissue. You are burning your gums or gingivae

b) How often do you brush????? 3x a day? and floss regularily? like everyday????

c) Prevention is the key, and you can only point the finger at yourself if you go in every 4 months. There is reason.....

d) the hygenist CAN give you injections to numb your gums but then when she is scaling or using the water spray, you will have discomfort afterward. after the anesthetic wares off.

e) gums that are that inflamed can get infections so again, brush, floss, rinse with mouth wash and ONLY YOU CAN TURN THIS AROUND....!!!!!

e)I am afraid you have to confront your own demons by pointing the finger at yourself.

f) I really do feel for you but your gums have been in sad shape b4 you started.

g) like excersise, if you go gun hoe at first you will hurt yourself and or you will quit. but if you diet, eat right and do things in moderation you will certainly turn around and lose the weight.

h) tell your Dental Hygenist that you are very sensitive and to PLEASE HAVE SOME EMPATHY FOR YOU ........They can be gentle..........

I don%26#039;t think you wanted to hear what I had to say but I hope it helps......

How often should you get your dog's teeth cleaned?

I guess I%26#039;ve been neglecting to brush my dog%26#039;s teeth and now there%26#039;s some visible plaque on her back teeth. Besides the obvious cosmetic benefits, is there any other reason to get a teeth cleaning for her? If I should, how often should teeth cleanings be? Thanks in advance

How often should you get your dog%26#039;s teeth cleaned?
teeth cleaning is as beneficial to dogs as it is for humans. Bad teeth can cause heart disease, and rotten teeth can lead to horribly painful infections. We tell our clients about every couple years, BUT it depends all on the animal. there are some dogs who need dentals every six months and others who only need it every couple years. once your dog gets his dental make sure he gets regular checkups thereafter from your vet to assess the amount of plaque.
Reply:Once a year to help keep gums and teeth healthy
Reply:ive never had a dogs teeth cleaned and never will. all my dogs lasted a long time
Reply:teeth cleaning is essential of dogs, because that%26#039;s the thing that they use on a day to day basis (even playing fetch). By not cleaning your dog%26#039;s teeth, they can get many gum problems just like we can, and it weakens and causes the teeth and gums to be sore, which makes them unable or difficult to eat. teeth cleaning should be, in my thinking, at least once per 2 weeks. getting your dog chew on the toy bones is also a good choice, cause it exercises their jaw muscles and cleans their teeth of plaque. they also have treats for dogs that cleans the dogs%26#039; teeth if they chew on them. check out your local pet store and ask them about those products, and if you%26#039;re still worried about what diseases your dog can get from not brushing your dog%26#039;s teeth, check with your vet.
Reply:She could get cavities and lose her teeth just like humans. Then it would be really hard for her to eat or play, she would have to be fed canned/soft food only. I do not know about this since she already has plaque. Take her to the vet or doggy dentist and see if she needs her teeth professionally cleaned or just a good brushing. This is what I do with our dogs (both ours and foster dogs). They get their teeth brushed once a month; there are doggy toothbrushes sized according to the dogs mouth/size (example you wouldnt want to brush a baby puppys mouth with a brush made for an adult large breed dog). You can get toothpaste in dog friendly flavors. This month we have pork. I have seen beef flavor, peanut butter flavor, etc. Also, our dogs chew compressed rawhide chews. This helps to keep their teeth healthy and exercised and to prevent plaque from forming on teeth. Also, there are hard plastic/rubber dental chew bones especially designed for cleaning teeth. The toothbrush, paste, bones, etc we get come from PetSmart, but I am sure any pet supply store has them. GOOD LUCK
Reply:Feed the dog dry food daily so the gums %26amp; teeth get a regular work out. Use canned food occasionaly and if there%26#039;s bad breath, try a DentaBone.
Reply:plaque on teeth can cause infections that when swallowed can get into the dogs bloodstream and into the heart causing irreversible damage. Most heart problems in cats and dogs are caused by neglected teeth. My dog gets her teeth cleaned every two years because I brush her teeth every day and give her chew treats with enzymes to break down plaque. you can get them from the vet or use greenie treats from petco.
Reply:I brush my dog%26#039;s teeth every day. I use a chicken flavored enzyme toothpaste. I%26#039;m trying to avoid having her go under anesthesia unnecessarily.
Reply:I have Lexi%26#039;s teeth cleaned at least one a month along with her grooming.

Is there anything that can be done at the dentist while having your teeth cleaned to make it more comfortable?

I have a real problem with getting my teeth cleaned. They are so sensitive especially around the gum line, that having my teeth cleaned is pure torture for me and I mean that literally. So needless to say, I only have my teeth cleaned appx. once every 3-4 years. Sad but true. I%26#039;ve had root canals, crowns, fillings...you name it, i%26#039;ve had it done, and nothing for me is painful except a cleaning. I realize that prevention is the key to good oral hygene and healthy teeth and gums, but I just can%26#039;t bear getting my teeth cleaned. I welcome any suggestions. Thanx !

Is there anything that can be done at the dentist while having your teeth cleaned to make it more comfortable?
i have the same problem. i floss daily and brush three times daily ... but from prior HORRIBLE experiences at the dentist i%26#039;m completely freaked out about cleanings.

i now ask the dentist to put the topical numbing pink stuff on my gums ~ section by section ~ as they are cleaning. the numbness doesn%26#039;t last as long as if they had to give Novocaine, but it works. they just numb each section.

it%26#039;s great .. it%26#039;s painless ... you aren%26#039;t numb for hours afterward and makes the whole process less stressful for you .. and for the hygienest.

good luck!
Reply:Yeah, floss your teeth. If you did that then they wouldnt be so bad. You nasty mouth
Reply:If you went every 3-4 months, it wouldn%26#039;t be so bad. Trust me.

In the meantime, it is possible to get numb. Just ask for some shots. You can expect this to take a couple of visits or more, though, and you can expect to pay for each visit.

SOMETIMES, just using %26quot;topical%26quot; (they know what that means) on the tip of the instrument is adequate, so ask about that first.
Reply:No pain, no gain.
Reply:You HAVE periodontal gum disease .

.

You need to take better care of your teeth ,by flossing and stimulating the gums .

I know I had the same problem .

Now it is not too bad getting them cleaned ,

Good luck.
Reply:Listen to Dr. Sam, he%26#039;s right on the money. You going only every 3-4 years doesn%26#039;t help to make it a more comfortable cleaning, it%26#039;s just making it worse. So first off, you need to go at least every 6 months (sometimes every 3 or 4 months, depending on what your dentist recommends) and when you call to make your next cleaning appointment, ask them to numb you. You may have to break the cleaning up into 2 visits (make sure your two visits are scheduled within a week or two of each other) because it%26#039;s no fun to be numb EVERYWHERE in your mouth at once. Hope this helps.
Reply:Depending on what state you live in, your hygienest may be able to administer to you some local anesthesia (if not the hygienest, then the dentist can.) Unlike general anesthesia, you don%26#039;t go to sleep, or feel groggy when your under the effects. It prevents messages from your teeth to your brain, so you don%26#039;t feel the discomfort of the procedure. This along with regular cleanings should improve your experiences at the dental appointment. Good Luck!!

I had my teeth cleaned today for the first time in like 15 years............................ it supposed?

to hurt while they are cleaning my teeth??????

it was kinda painful, not that painful, but it was not pleasant.

I had my teeth cleaned today for the first time in like 15 years............................ it supposed?
yes it is normal for the cleaning to hurt especially if it has been 15 years and he does a deep clean OUCH! but it is worth it.
Reply:yes, that%26#039;s why most people don%26#039;t like going to the dentist, it isn%26#039;t exactly comfortable.

But you gotta do what you gotta do. I%26#039;ll take a day of discomfort every now and then for healthy teeth.
Reply:Yeah, it is normal to bleed and experience pain, especially if you didn%26#039;t go for 15 years.
Reply:Yes that%26#039;s normal. Its also normal for the gums to bleed a little. They probably did a deep cleaning to get any plaque out from in between teeth and from the gum lines.Take Alleve which is naproxen that has anti inflammatory abilities and be easy on eating hard things for the day and by tomorrow you should be fine.
Reply:congratulations on having teeth!
Reply:Uh, ya, 15 years of buildup. Imagine if you didn%26#039;t shower or wash your hands for 15 years.
Reply:I went to the dentist yesterday and had my teeth cleaned too (first time in about 6 years), there was a small amount of bleeding, some discomfort and very weird feeling now when I rub my tounge over my teeth!
Reply:Yes, that%26#039;s normal. It means they did a good job. It%26#039;ll be ok in a day or so. Go regularly, every 6 months and maybe it won%26#039;t be so bad next time. You probably had a lot of plaque build up.
Reply:The best cleaning Ive experienced was when the hygenist had the lightest touch! Some hygenists think they are mining for gold and dig and dig and dig! After the 1st experience and going home with very swollen/painful and bleeding gums, I made it a point to tell the hygenist the next time that she was too rough. After all, the only way they can know that they are causing you pain is if you are wincing and/or saying %26quot;OWCH!!!%26quot;

Also, my gums tend to get a little tender from flossing. Mostly cause I dont do it very regularly. So maybe that is the reason for your pain...

DONT quit going to the dentist, please! It may suck, but this set of teeth was FREE!!
Reply:Considering that you haven%26#039;t had your teeth professionally cleaned in 15 years. Yes....it will hurt at first.

Just properly floss and brush your teeth everyday and visit your professional every six months. I guarantee that you wouldn%26#039;t feel like you did today.

Feel better!
Reply:15 years yea it is supose 2 hurt a lil.. but dont worry u wil get use 2 it! that is if u go like ur supose 2!
Reply:A regular cleaning shouldnt hurt at all but a deep cleaning is a different story. A deep cleaning is probably what they did for you considering its been so long. In a deep cleaning they really get in there and go to town to get plaque out from under the edges of your gums which can be painful. I had a deep cleaning a few weeks ago and was sore for 2-3 days. Try some advil or tylenol if you feel you need it.
Reply:Yeah its called 15 yrs of hard tarter. Ouch!

Wil getting your teeth cleaned professionally whiten them as well?
A professional cleaning will typical do a general %26quot;polish%26quot; as well - so that%26#039;ll remove some of the stains %26amp; discoloration. Won%26#039;t be as good as a %26quot;whitening%26quot; or %26quot;bleaching%26quot; - but it%26#039;ll whiten %26#039;em a bit (depending on how stained/discolored they are to begin with)

If i go get my teeth cleaned?

if i go get my teeth cleaned and thats all i want them to do are they going to do anything else to me and after there done cleaning them are they goin to be white i have yellow teeth right now... do creast white strips work too answer both plaese thanks

If i go get my teeth cleaned?
You%26#039;ll see a difference in the color after being cleaned by the dentist, but it all depends on how yellow they are, and what the cause is (smoker, coffee or tea drinker). If you want them really white, you can ask for them to be bleached, which will have a longer effect than if you bleached at home.

As for the Crest WhiteStrips, I don%26#039;t know. I%26#039;ve never used them and don%26#039;t know anyone who has.
Reply:your teeth won%26#039;t all of a sudden become white after a cleaning at the dentist. and i%26#039;ve heard that crest white strips work ok, but it takes a while til you%26#039;ll see a difference.
Reply:Nothing will be done that you do not consent to. It is a normal part of a cleaning appt to check for any areas of decay, gum disease, and other problems and to inform you of them so that you can make informed decisions about bettering your dental health. The polishing performed at the end of a cleaning can remove some surface stain, but will not bleach them white. Whitestrips do work but the results may not last as long as professional whitening.
Reply:I used the crest white strips premium plus, they worked GREAT for me!! I would recommend them to everyone. Going to the dentist to get your teeth cleaned will not make them white, but it will clean the plaque so they don%26#039;t get worse and build up cavities.
Reply:I really hope u get this message. Whatever u do DON%26#039;T use CREST WHITE STRIPS!!!! It will eat the enamel off your teeth over time and then your teeth will be sensitive to EVERYTHING! I am a dental asst. We have ALOT of people who come in with that problem from those crest white strips. Use the toothpaste instead. When u get your teeth clean it will just clean out all the nasty%26#039;s that you can%26#039;t really get yourself when flossing and brushing. The other thing they may do is get partial or a full mouth xray. Oh and tell you if you need to make any other appts for any teeth problems they may find in the cleaning and or xrays. Good luck!!

Does the dentist clean your teeth with braces still on?

ok i have this orthodontist appoint..and the next day, teeth cleaning at my regular dentist. do i still have to get them cleaned...or do i wait til they get off...

Does the dentist clean your teeth with braces still on?
You will get your teeth cleaned at the dentist even with braces on. They blast %26quot;sand%26quot; on your teeth to polish away stains, and ofcourse floss and what else they would normally do.
Reply:Yes you can and should have your teeth cleaned even with braces on. We (dentist or hygienist) can still get your teeth really clean even with all of the bands and brackets, and monitor for things like cavities, gingivitis etc. Waiting until you get your braces off to have your teeth cleaned would be a huge mistake. As the other poster said we use what we call a prophy jet to clean people that have braces on their teeth. It is like a sand blaster, but for your teeth. The prophy jet uses a sodium mixture to basically blast off the plaque, food debris and stain that accumulates on the teeth. We even use the prophy jet on people without braces. However it works great for people with ortho. You will be doing the right thing if you see your orthodontist and then your dentist for your cleaning.
Reply:Yes,because food that gets caught in between the braces..

How do you keep your teeth clean without using floss?

i have been cleaning my teeth with a normal toothbrush because my electric one is nto charged up and i forgot the charger this last few weeks Floss gets really stuck in between my teeth and they feel dirty. Yuk, is there any way to get them feeling more refreshed and cleaner?

How do you keep your teeth clean without using floss?
You need to try different brands of floss to find one that doesn%26#039;t get stuck between your teeth. Honestly, YOU MUST FLOSS or you%26#039;ll lose your teeth early in life. Flossing is the single most important thing you can do to prevent gum disease which is the leading cause of tooth loss and need for dentures. You%26#039;ll save yourself a fortune in future money by flossing. You%26#039;ll get to keep your teeth too!

Furthermore, by not flossing, you%26#039;re setting yourself up for an additional cost at a critical financial time in your life. If you have children, it%26#039;s likely they%26#039;ll need braces at the same time you%26#039;ll need to be paying for periodontal work for yourself. Flossing can help you avoid having to pay an orthodontist and a periodontist all in the same few years. Because most people end up needing dental work that results from not flossing when they%26#039;re in the 40s or 50s.

Just to give you an idea of the costs involved in having both children and parents needing orthodontists and periodontists at the same time, here are some numbers:

Braces $3,500 to $5,000 (orthodontist)

ONE (1) tooth implant $1,000 to $2,000 (periodontist)

Then there%26#039;s deep root cleaning, surgery and all sorts of painful expensive stuff when you end up at the periodontist because of not flossing while younger.
Reply:have guavas and apples.ure teeth would remain clean.good luc
Reply:Brush them, or stop eating
Reply:Chewing gum, preferably sugarless.
Reply:brush with cooking salt.
Reply:i keep my teeth clean without using floss by throwing them in a cup with polident. i lost all my teeth due cavities and gum disease due to not flossing. guess you%26#039;ll just keep trying to floss or buy the waxed floss now.
Reply:Go to a large drugstore and look in the dental hygiene section. You will find many alternatives to conventional floss, included teflon coated tapes, tiny brushes, metal scrapers, wooden scrapers, etc.

I find Peelu brand toothpaste and gum helpful in keeping plaques under control, but these are no substitute for mechanically scraping away the plaques.
Reply:Dont forget to change your toothbrush every three months. WaterPik is a different method to flossing that doesnt require actual floss and is just as effective if not more.
Reply:you need to floss their is nothing else that can get as much bacteria out of the spaces then flossing. you should try crest glide floss, it is in a silver case and i also have tight contacts in between my teeth and this is wonderful,it makes other floss look like fishing wire, but you need to floss or else you will get gigivitis and possibly periodontal disease in the long run, just experiment with different floss brands and types.. also get floss that is waxed, unwaxed floss sticks and tears more. good luck
Reply:At the risk of sounding like a broken record you have to floss everyday. Yes brushing cleans the teeth, but what about in between where your toothbrush can%26#039;t reach? Floss is the answer. If floss is getting stuck, try waxed floss or GLIDE it is smoother and does not get stuck as easy. Also the person that mentioned apples is right on, but leave the skin on. The skin is tough and acts as a sort of dental floss getting in between the teeth in some places. If you are not flossing then you are running a great risk of getting decay or bone loss that comes with periodontal disease.

Is the teeth, tongue and cheek cleaning toothbrush just a stupid gimmick!?

Come on at least 25% of the public are not that gullible !!!!

Is the teeth, tongue and cheek cleaning toothbrush just a stupid gimmick!?
Yes its a gimmick.
Reply:We have been fine without it before now, its just another product for companies to market and make money from.
Reply:Yes... and i find it so unheigenic, rubbing the back off your toothbrush all around your mouth, why cant you just use the hairs on the brush...like people have been...for years??
Reply:yes it is!!!! it is , it is,!! and yes people are that gullible, the brush cleans your tongue better than some stupid scraper!!
Reply:no i like this idea, people with bad break, ew!
Reply:So 25% are not gullible and 75% are, gee that makes sense.

You%26#039;re right, just stick to soap on your finger, I%26#039;m sure you%26#039;ll be fine !!
Reply:Not really. I mean think about it where do you think most of the germs fester , if not on the teeth then on the tongue, gums, and the roof of the mouth.
Reply:Yes. You can use the brush side to clean your %26quot;whole mouth%26quot; if you feel the need. So is the %26quot;it%26#039;s my choice%26quot; bit in the sensitive teeth advert.
Reply:It%26#039;s a gimmick to sell special toothbrushes. You can do it all with a normal toothbrush if you want to. (I do and it certainly makes my tongue look better)
Reply:I have never heard about this toothbrush, however I have a tongue cleaner and have used it for years...ir has been used in india for thousands of years and has known health benefits...many doctors in this country are now starting to recommend them
Reply:teeth ,tongue toothbrush

i have seen in ads but teeth ,tongue and cheek cleaner

never heard of itt........

u have forgot to mention cheek from outside or inside?

if from outside then........i dont know

if from inside then........i dont know again.....

i m soo dumb ......... but i can make u laugh......
Reply:Are you sure? Did you ask them yourself or is that the opinion of so called people, the company (who are trying to sell this to you) supposedly interviewed?

If you are going to spend money on it, then I would say, as with most things, it%26#039;s a gimmick. Most companies make millions on gullible people and I am no exception so, if you want it because it%26#039;s the %26#039;in thing%26#039; go ahead but don%26#039;t believe everything you are told or read!
Reply:i agree ..BUT . they do have a point that cleaning your teeth will not clean all your mouth and you can have plaque and bacteria in other places in your mouth

Getting cats teeth cleaned cost?

My 10 year old cat is due for a teeth cleaning and her vet said that it will cost between $600-$1200 depending on if she needs extractions, extra xrays etc. This seems like it is very expensive so I am curious how much other people have paid for this. Obviously I don%26#039;t want to risk her health just to save a few bucks but I also don%26#039;t want to just jump in and do it there simply because it is her regular vet if they are overcharging.

Getting cats teeth cleaned cost?
I%26#039;m not sure what country you are in, but in Australia, were I work as a vet nurse, I can tell you that the starting cost of a dental is around $400. Yes, there are many contributing factors to the cost, xrays can easily add $200 to it = $600 you were quoted. As you say, each vet practice may charge slightly differently, but thats a ball park figure. Also, if they want to put the cat on IV fluids during the dental or take teath out or run blood test prior to the procedure or have the cat on a course of antibiotics after the dental, that will all be extra. It is very difficult to make comparisons on vet quotes unless you know EXACTLY what they have quoted you for. Get a print out quote so you know and take it to another vet so you can compare oranges with oranges, if you get my meaning. Thats often a mistake people make when comparing prices. Also, be aware, for a vet to quote accurately it involves examining the patient, which means you would have to pay another consult fee somewhere else to get a proper quote. An over the phone quote from another vet might sound like a good price but it may not include all those other things you will end up needind that I mentioned above.

Hope this helps
Reply:yah i used to work at a vet clinic and the price normally ranged from $400-800.... it is really expensive because of anesthetics, time, equipment... but it is worth it if you love your cat...healthy teeth and gums are important...
Reply:Wow that is alot..I have two cats and yes you do love them.. But that really sounds really high..
Reply:My cat is 2 years old and he got his teeth cleaned just last year. The total was $226 and some change. He had bloodwork done before the surgery, then the cleaning and they also extracted 4 teeth. This total included antibiotics and pain medication.

The estimate your vet gave you seems quite high. I would call around to other offices and simply ask for an estimate.

Good luck!
Reply:I work at a vet clinic and that sounds like a pretty accurate estimate for a feline dental. Although if you do shop around for better prices, make sure that you compare based on the services that are being offered. For example, one clinic may cost $1200 but this includes ultrasonic cleaning, fluoride treatment, x-rays, safety precautions such a IV fluid and post-operative overnight-care. On the other hand the cheaper clinic charging $600 will only do a basic cleaning with a hand scaler.
Reply:Whoa!!! I think my vet charges about $160. I highly recommend that you try PetzLife gel before paying for a cleaning. It%26#039;s %26lt;$25, and it totally worked with my cat. It could save you a fortune, and you wouldn%26#039;t have to anesthetize your cat.

http://www.petmountain.com/product/denta...
Reply:Don%26#039;t know where you are, but that is super high charging!

Here in W. Canada, it%26#039;s about $200 for teeth cleaning and depending on complications of extractions about $75 per tooth removal if necessary.

X-Ray if needed about $75 and blood work should be taken on a cat that age 1st, around $125 for full panel.

Hope you do get a quote from another reputable vet.

Gd. luck.
Reply:Holy god, that%26#039;s way too much. Get a second and a third and maybe even a fourth opinion. Frankly, you%26#039;d be better off just getting a tube of cat toothpaste and brushing her teeth yourself.
Reply:I paid about 250-300 for a simple cleaning with no anesthesia for mine and I thought that was too high. your cat must need some extra work or maybe they need to put her to sleep, that would add a lot to the cost
Reply:why have them cleaned give them crunchies out 17 yr old tom cat has always had crunchies to clean his teeth so it wont stress him out snyway you should look after your cats teeth better
Reply:Tooth care for cats can be very expensive, but you have to remember the cat has anesthetic and needs extra personnel to watch the cat. My vet wanted to give kitty a fluoride treatment but I decided that was a bit much. Mine is an older girl and I know she%26#039;s going to lose some teeth. The extractions are figured on a per minute per tooth basis, so that can get expensive quickly. I was sorry to see my kitty with a toothache so she%26#039;s having her teeth cleaned at the same time she is spayed so she will only need to go under once. My cat is a retired purebred breeding cat about 12 years old and is in otherwise fine shape. The estimate for the spaying and drugs and work on her teeth is about $1,000 and could be more depending on her teeth. I%26#039;m glad I had some money put aside and I hope none of my other cats is in need of vet care very soon. The vet talked about how I would have to brush her teeth after she was well again, but I can%26#039;t see her allowing me to do that. I think if I had started messing with her teeth when she was a kitten she%26#039;d tolerate it better now. I guess we%26#039;ll just do the best we can under the circumstances.

Is having a cats teeth cleaned really necessary? Aside from decay or gum disease.?

I love my cat and everyhing it just seems silly and unnecessary and have been told different things suah as cats have enzyes to keep their teeth clean aside from their sweat. 300 bucks for a teeth cleaning is just absurd.

Is having a cats teeth cleaned really necessary? Aside from decay or gum disease.?
Sometimes veterinary fees depend on where you live. Major metropolitan areas are more expensive for everything. You might want to call around and price the procedure with different vets. If there is a veterinary school near you, they do a lot of good stuff for animals for a very small fee. The work is done by veterinarians to demonstrate the technique to students. Sometimes the more experienced students will be allowed to actively participate, but always with the licensed vet right there. Actually, that is what goes on with people who have surgery in large teaching hospitals too. The residents sometimes do the surgery under the supervision of the surgeon.

Look for clinics, income adjusted veterinary services available through some shelters. $300.00 seems like an awful of money, unless your cat needs some extensive dental work, like extractions, root canals, etc.
Reply:yah it is absurd. I have only had one cat that has need to get her teeth clean, and that is because she had some weird breathing disease (we called is asthma) which gave her really bad breathe.

Besides that I my family has taken in a lot of cats and that was the only one that we have ever had to get its teeth cleaned.
Reply:Cats can get plaque build up on their teeth. That is what causes cavities and gum disease. A yearly dental check is a must to keep cats healthy. Gum disease can actually cause heart problems in cats. It is not that much money and your cat will be healthier longer.
Reply:IF that were true, cats would not have tooth and gum disease. I work at a cat shelter and at least 65% of the cats we take in need their teeth cleaned before going up for adoption. About half of those need at least one tooth extracted.

300 does sound excessive, but that does not mean it is not something that does not need to be done!!!!!!!!!!!!

You would be suprised how awful the teeth can be even if they do not look that bad!! And if there is infection and decay in the mouth long enough, the cat can suffer heart and kidney failure from it!!
Reply:Totally agree with you. I have kept many cats for years (30 years) and I have 6 now and there is no way I would put any of my cats through an anaesetic just to get their teeth cleaned! Ridiculous.

Unnecessary. The only time I%26#039;d ever consider dental work would be if they had something wrong in the first place. (Which none of mine ever have)

I

It%26#039;s wrong, wrong wrong.

Oooh I feel better now after my little outburst!
Reply:if kitty has any infections in his gums, then his health will fail. how old is kitty?? a vet i liked in long beach told me that my kitty might need it by age 12 if tartar kept growing. i switched her to dry food--best quality--no fillers--and she was fine, never needed thi tooth cleaning. the reason it is so spensive is the anesthetic--try sticking your finger in kitty%26#039;s mouth--no likee--so they are sleeping when their teeth are cleaned.

your vet should be honest with you--his interests should be in the kitty%26#039;s best intetests--ask him. see what hesays. if he says before age 12, i would ask why he thinks that--if it sounds real--ask if dry food would make any difference--go from there.

i am not all for going out blindly and doing just what any vet or md tells me--i look for other oopinions that might agree more with my thoughts on the subject. good luck...... if it is necessary, and kitty really really needs it, seek second opinion always.
Reply:if the cat has a gum infection(foul breath is a sign) or tartar along the gumline, the bacteria from the inflamed, unclean gums can travel down the throat, and lodge in their favorite place-the heart valves.these bacteria will cause a problem called cardiomyopathy.i adopted a stray cat who had never had her teeth cleaned.unfortunately, the damage was done.after 2 and a half years on heart pills, she died.the vet estimated her age as 9.considering my other cats, whom ive had since they were kittens, are now age 15 and 17,u can see proper care extends life.HUMANS,take note-clean ur own teeth regularly as well-see dentist every 6 months-according to recent findings by the ama,the same problem can affect humans with gum disease and improper oral care-namely,disease/destruction of the heart valves invaded by oral bacteria, also, hardening of the arteries caused by constant inflammation from bad teeth/gums.
Reply:The same bacteria that cause tartar and plaque build-up in a kitty can also cause heart disease. I do agree that $300 is a high price tag, so shop around. But get it done.
Reply:$300 does sound a bit high; I%26#039;d do some shopping around.

But I%26#039;d certainly do it. I have three kitties, and they get their little pointy teeth cleaned yearly; years ago, the vet showed me how the tartar had built up around Obie Two%26#039;s gumline, and how inflamed it was. Since then, I%26#039;ve given my beloved kitties the dental care they need (whether they like it or not...and, they don%26#039;t).
Reply:In the past 37 years we%26#039;ve had 3 cats(one for 20 years) and we have NEVER had their teeth cleaned because the price is, as you say, absurd.
Reply:It probably isn%26#039;t necessary unless your cat has an obvious tartar build-up problem which your vet can give you an opinion on at your cat%26#039;s annual check-up.
Reply:Yes, it%26#039;s necessary %26amp; you can help by doing simple, cheaper actions at home.

There is toothpaste %26amp; brushes just for cats. You can also rub their gums gently with a moistened piece of gauze.

Feeding your cat more dry food than moist is healthier. I also buy cat treats especially for their teeth.

Luck to you %26amp; your cat!
Reply:Lyn and Tigger are right. Bacteria and plaque(containg bacteria) are shed into the cat%26#039;s body and can damage heart, liver or kidneys.

The fourteen year old cat I just took into my home had the worst looking mouth conditions I have ever seen in a cat. The vet and I decided to wait a week for him to get settled in my home before doing a %26quot;dental%26quot;. He was here only 36 hours and I realized he was hardly eating at all (he had all the food he was used to from the boarding facility he had been in for six months). So we did a dental for him the next Monday on an emergency basis. One tooth had a horrible abcess and had to be pulled. If he had not gotten to me by then he could have been severly damaged with infection spreading throughout his body, problems caused by not being able to eat, etc. The owner who had a vet check for him before the boarding had been told he was in great need of having his teeth attended to.

So it is not a cosmetic thing with an older cat and can be crucial to their continuing in good health for the rest of their lives. All commercial cat foods, wet and dry, are not good for cats%26#039; teeth and the cats need to have their mouths checked by the vet at their annual exam. It is expensive - some of my cats need it every year, some only every two years. It%26#039;s around $165 here and that is mostly the cost of the gas anesthesia. I live in the San Francisco area and our cost of living (including vet care) is one of the highest in the nation. $300 seems excessive to me.

How are your teeth cleaned in quads?

I have to have deep cleaning of my teeth and the dentist said they can do it in quads. How are our teeth quads i mean is it the top then bottom then the sides or what

How are your teeth cleaned in quads?
The top right side, top left side, bottom right side, bottom left side of the mouth. That%26#039;s the normal thing for the deep cleaning. You could get one quad done, wait a while til you have more money, get the next quad done. I would suggest you get it all done within 1 year at least though.
Reply:Are you getting it cleaned for free at a dental college?

If so, it means you will have to visit 4 times, getting only 1/4 of the mouth cleaned each visit... ?? Or if your teeth are really bad, it might take the whole hour to clean a quad....?? You should ask...
Reply:When a dentist is cleaning your teeth or referring to them in a chart he uses quads because there are 4 sections of the mouth Upper right Lower right Upper left and Lower left
Reply:the quad thing has been answered - but see if the dentist can prescribe a different antibiotic that will be covered - I asked and the dentist gave me a different one that is covered- if you haven%26#039;t filled it already. good luck

Braces off and teeth cleaned same day?

I am getting my braces off in about a month in the morning and I wanted to schedule a teeth cleaning appointment with my dentist for that same afternoon. Is this a bad idea? Will my teeth be too sensitive?

Thanks for your help!

Braces off and teeth cleaned same day?
ask the orthodontist i got mine cleaned the same day
Reply:if you don%26#039;t mind maybe feeling a little pain, but while you are there you might as well do it. Your dentist will let you know if your teeth may just be too sensitve but chances are they won%26#039;t be! just ask your dentist if you can do it some dentists are different.
Reply:i would personally do it a day or two after. your teeth are going to feel really weird for a few days..
Reply:Go for it!!! Your teeth will feel a little %26quot;slimey%26quot; after your braces are removed, so why not have them cleaned? Your teeth may be more sensitive...yes.
Reply:They will be sensitive, but then you don%26#039;t have to worry the white spots. Congratulations!! :)
Reply:wow thats very smart I will probably try to do that too when I get my braces off

How much will it cost for the vet to do a thorough cleaning of the teeth?

It cost me $120 CAN and they almost killed my cat because they left a piece of gauze lodged in her trachea, the said it was normal for her to be breathing funny and sounding very fluid like....turned out it wasnt I stayed up all night with her and she wasnt drinking and was struggling to breathe finally I used a syringe to make her drink some water and she puked up a chunk of gauze about an inch in diameter..... I was sooo pissed I freaked. SO make sure you tell them to count the gauze like in humans before and after to ensure getting them all out.

How much will it cost for the vet to do a thorough cleaning of the teeth?
It depends on the vet. Your animal may need teeth out too. My cat goes and he had to have his teeth out. It really depends on the vet. But it usually is expensive.
Reply:There are as many answers to that as there are vets!

Call some practices in your area and ask them.
Reply:Usually around $120. Sometimes more if they have to pull any teeth.
Reply:It depends on the vet and how clean the teeth are. It may be around 30 dollars plus an office visit fee, but they may find something else they want to fix, so let them know you just want the teeth cleaned. Although it may not hurt to get a check-up at the same time if your cat needs it.
Reply:Actual, there are better ways to save money than go to a vet instead of your dentist. And why is this question in the cat category?
Reply:Every hospital varies the prices. I%26#039;ve watched a couple of dental procedures at this point. The animal is given a a relaxing agent and put on anesthesia. There%26#039;s the time it takes to do the procedure. It depends on how much work is involved: Is there a lot of tartar? Do any teeth need to be pulled? Then there%26#039;s the polish that makes the teeth white. Sometimes, the animal is also given a pain med. Each of these factors goes into what the bill will come out to.

Getting my teeth cleaned tomorrow...?

I go to the dentist once or twice a year, but I think it%26#039;s been like 8 months since I got a cleaning. I can%26#039;t remember if it hurts or not? My teeth are sensitive because I was bulimic for a long time (not any more though) I%26#039;m going tomorrow to get them cleaned, but does it hurt?

Getting my teeth cleaned tomorrow...?
no no no

1 usually x-rays

2 plaque pick your teeth

3 flavored polish - removes stains

4 floride - seals a invisible protective laver -shield agaings cavities also flavored

5 Inital check-up real dentist not the hygenist - comes back with x-rays and looks for abcesses and cavitys/ any other concerns

This is painless and the polish/floride foam tastes really nice - hope you have a great day ! enjoy it
Reply:Not really
Reply:It doesn%26#039;t hurt. They just scrape your teeth to get any film off of them and depending on your tech they will floss. Then they take a brush with floride on and rub it on your teeth. Nothing to hurt you. Good Luck!
Reply:It doesn%26#039;t hurt, but it also depends on who is doing the cleaning. I%26#039;ve been to a few hygenists that were really rough and made me bleed more than I should have. The one I have now I absolutely love and she doesn%26#039;t hurt me a bit. If it starts to hurt let them know and they should ease up on you. No worries! ♥
Reply:They might push a little but it doesn%26#039;t hurt and it%26#039;s always good to tell them if you are nervous
Reply:Not really, it feels like someone is spraying water on your teeth.
Reply:it should not hurt and if it does tell the doctor
Reply:You should not hurt per say, but it may be uncomfortable due to your sensitivity. When you binge and then purge (as you say you used to be bullemic) the acid from the vomit can erode the enamel on your teeth which leads to the sensitivity. You may be sensitive to the cold water, but let the hygienist know and she should try to make you as comfortable as possible. Also ask spec. for a f2 treatment, it can help make sensitive teeth more comfortable. Good luck.
Reply:It doesn%26#039;t hurt. The only thing is that you will get tired of saying %26quot;Ahhhh%26quot;. Good Luck!
Reply:Not generally, but it you have sensitive teeth I would suggest taking some Tylenol before your cleaning. Also, remind the dentist or dental tech that you have sensitive teeth. They can take measures to help insure your comfort.

There is a new fluoride tablet you can take to strengthen you teeth. Ask your dentist about it.
Reply:a little but only for a few seconds and its not pain where you are going to cry. I have sensitive teeth and gums and in the end I usually have little to no pain but they do bleed a lot.
Reply:I can answer that for you from so many expriences. There%26#039;s nothing for you to worry about I used to work in a dental office so I can tell you it%26#039;s just what it say%26#039;s your just getting a clean so don%26#039;t panic. All they actually do is clean your teeth and check for cavities nothing for you to freak about although you might want to tell your dentist that your a little nervious being honest is key. Just relax it%26#039;ll be over before you know it trust me I gave them and I recieved them nothing to worry about. it%26#039;s as if your cleaning your teeth only we do a little more and have a better chance of not missing anything. relax it%26#039;ll be okay. After it%26#039;s done email me at Learyfreena@Yahoo.com and tell me how it went.

Always,
