What does the dentist do when cleaning your teeth (from plaque and stuff)?

I%26#039;m in school for hygiene. First we take a look around using the mirror and explorer. Its an instrument used to feel the teeth to detect calculus and and to go under the gums to find subgingival calculus. Once detected, we use scalars and curettes to remove the calculus. they are the hook and pointy things someone else was mentioning. we sometimes probe the pocket depths around your teeth to see how far down the gingiva is attached. most healthy mouths are about 1-2mm, no more then 3mm. more than that could be the start of periodontal disease.

We also coronal polish your teeth with a low to high grit paste to remove stain. tooth paste is only used on teeth with no stain. then we floss and sometimes if necessary, fluoride is used to help prevent decay.

Reply:They use a little water sprayer and also a suction tube, They also scrape teeth with different shaped needle/hook type things.
