Cleaning my dog's teeth?

How often and when should I clean my 3 year old dog%26#039;s teeth? Also, how much is it for a vet to clean them for me? Can I safely and effectively clean them myself? Do I HAVE to take her to a vet to have them cleaned? Thanks!

You can buy doggie toothpaste and a doggie toothbrush ! The toothpaste is poultry flavour ... yummy for the dog !
Reply:If your dog%26#039;s teeth are healthy and clean, you dont have to clean them. I once asked my vet how much it would be to have them cleaned, and they said $150 (yikes!). You can safely clean them yourself if you buy special dog toothpaste and you brush them gently while he/she is calm, and then you dont have to pay for the vet to do it. But if your dog wont behave and it cant be done at home, the vet should do it.
Reply:it costs alot of money at the vets sometimes over £100 if they are bad. they have to put your dog under anesthetic so thats another risk and they actually chip away at your dogs teeth to get the plaque of. they do sell dog tooth brushes and tooth paste that you can get in all different meat flavours. it is best to do you dogs teeth about once every 2-3 week. be careful though there gums are really sensitive just like ours! hope i have helped feel free to email me if you have anymore questions.
Reply:It is very important to clean your dogs teeth. They sell at Pet smart tooth brushes and tooth past designed for dogs. You should clean them once a month or so, and have a vet look to see if they need to be cleaned professionaly once every couple of years. Hope that helps.
Reply:First of all you should clean your dogs teeth every couple of days. And yes you can clean them your self just go to a pet store and buy a dog toothbrush and dog toothpaste. {please don%26#039;t use human toothpaste because it%26#039;s bad if they swallow it}And yes you can probably take her to the vet it depends if they do that at the vet you go to.
Reply:I have clients/students that clean their dog%26#039;s teeth every day and some that only do it once a week. The daily cleaning can become a ritual and the dogs actually look forward to it.

Having your vet do dentistry is a different thing. Like the dentist would do for us, cleaning all the stain and calculus off of the teeth and checking the mouth for cavities. This should be done periodically, about every two to three years. You can do it yearly, if you have the money to spare. Shop around for the best price. Dentistry is one of the those procedures that can vary greatlly in price from vet to vet. Make some phone calls you might be surprised and catch a good deal.
