Why do you gag when cleaning your teeth? You dont exactly stick the tooth brush down your throat?

...... and the tooth paste tastes ok?

Why do you gag when cleaning your teeth? You dont exactly stick the tooth brush down your throat?
The reason for the %26#039;gag reflex%26#039; is cranial nerve IX - the glossopharyngeal. It innervates the back of your tongue to the back of your throat, and helps to control reverse peristalsis.

Some people have a glossopharyngeal that innervates a larger part of their tongue than other people, and have a very strong gag when they touch that area. As a result, some patients can%26#039;t scrape their tongue that well, or brush in the back without stimulating a gag.
Reply:It`s never made me gag....
Reply:Maybe it goes too close to the back of your mouth, once I accidently bit a bristle, then as I was brushing the teeth it came off and made me gag and be sick a little bit....it was not a pleasant experience!
Reply:If you stick it to far down its a reflex that makes you gag just like when you choke on food.
Reply:you should see a doctor or something, that%26#039;s not normal
Reply:I gag every time I brush, not not from brushing my teeth, but from brushing my tongue.

That is the cause of your bad breath. The back of your tongue needs to be cleaned off, as well as your teeth.

Gag is just a protective mechanism of the mouth to keep foreign objects from getting into the digestive tract. The vomit reflex is genius and has saved my life in more than one instance. I say bring on the technicolor yawn.
Reply:It happens to me if I brush my teeth immediately I get up. It is worse in winter because I get catarrh and my doctor says it is reflux. Try waiting until you have had your first cup of tea/coffee and then try.
Reply:i get the same thing. i think it%26#039;s because you forget to breathe while you brush your teeth. that and the combination of the specific mouth feel of the toothpaste (no matter how tasty it may be) lead to gagging.

next time, while you brush, take a break, take a breath and let me know how that works.
Reply:i don%26#039;t think it matters how the toothpaste tastes. it%26#039;s just one of your body%26#039;s reactions when something foregin gets close to your throat.
Reply:i get this whenever i brush my teeth with a regular toothebrush, switched to an electric type with a small round head and it doesnt happen even when i brush my tonge, how weird,,,,,,,,,,,, :-)
