Why does orange juice taste bad just after cleaning your teeth?

When you brushes your teeth with a toothpaste that contains sodium lauryl sulfate (or SLS), you notice this bitterness effect.

SLS reduces the sweet taste of sucrose (sugar) and at the same time strengthens the bitterness of citric acid (responsible for the sour and bitter taste of orange juice) by about ten times!

Why does orange juice taste bad just after cleaning your teeth?
In Australia they have Orange flavoured tooth paste.
Reply:Don%26#039;t clean your teeth with ****!!!
Reply:usually bcause of ur toothpaste that is still inside ur mouth. its like ur combinin mint with orange.
Reply:Think its a chemical reaction with the sodium from the tooth paste and the citric acid from the orange juice...
Reply:what tastes good after brushing?
Reply:Acid and mint flavour clash; you%26#039;d have the same problem if you had a glass of champagne after cleaning your teeth. It would taste like plonk!

Your taste buds can%26#039;t cope with the two flavours and they conflict.
Reply:haha just read this today in pop sci

there is a chemical in toothpaste that numbs ur taste buds for a while, especially the sweet ones, leaving the sour and bitter ones. now orange juice tastes: sweet, sour, AND bitter, so taking away sweet would make it sour and bitter
Reply:don%26#039;t drink after paste
Reply:It isn%26#039;t just orange juice everything tastes bad after brushing your teeth!
Reply:like when you cleen your teeth it%26#039;s the chemicals that makes you or feels like the ornge drink tates horrible
